December 4, 1991: Sorting Christmas mail was fairly easy but it took time to remember the slots for all the cities and provinces

Thirty years ago today

On Wednesday at 0:00 they called us from the cafeteria, showed us around the main postal station, and then took us to a room for a lecture. The training took three hours, and then we were escorted to the second floor to sort mail. It was fairly easy work but it took time to remember where the slots were for the various cities and provinces. Also since I'd been up since Tuesday morning I found myself dozing off.
We finished at 6:00 and I headed straight for River and Dundas. I was a little early and so I went and got a coffee. When I came back Ray from Speedy was there but Bill Black didn't show. We had to wait around two hours for another driver. We finished at around 17:00 and I got dropped off by Mike La Grangeur at the subway. I hadn't slept for almost 36 hours.

Hazel Shermet

On Thursday morning I finished working out the chords for “Mangos” by Serge Gainsbourg and ran through the song in French. I still need to go through singi ng my translation and make some small adjustments. I'll have that done tomorrow and upload it to Christian's Translations.
I weighed 88.5 kilos before breakfast. I drank a glass of orange juice and some of my coffee before leaving for my last tutorial.
As I was locking my bike in front of University College a very friendly and well fed squirrel came near me and started begging on its hind legs. It moved slightly away and then came back to do the same. When I said “I don't have any food for you but it was nice of you to ask” it took that as encouragement and climbed the iron fence to get closer to my level. It kind of made my morning.
In tutorial we talked about how hard it is to have to read a whole novel at the end of term. I mentioned Alice Munro saying that all novels would be better as short stories. Sarah wondered why short stories don;t grab people as much as novels. I suggested it's because people like to have a big plate of something in front of them rather than a little gourmet dinner. A novel is like a holiday and short stories are too short for a holiday even though they make better literature. Sarah asked if anyone besides me could name a literary journal.
The attendance question was “Do you have a pet?” I said I had cats for twenty years. Three generations and I named them after the daffodil family: Asphodel, Narcissa, Daffodil, Amorillo, and Jonquil. Sarah said she'd recently had to put down her cat because it had FIV or cat's AIDS.
The nature versus culture opposition dichotomy structures our thinking differently than in Enlightenment times when man was figured above animals. Salvage The Bones is in the present tense while most novels are in the past tense. Destructive female characters.
Sarah's dissertation is in environmental human Eco-criticism. Is all the destructiveness of Katrina natural or cultural? I said it's obviously cultural because the poor and mostly black people had to live in less flood protected parts of New Orleans. Poor people would have also had a more difficult time evacuating even if buses were provided. I said in the novel the pit is also cultural because it was created from the family's father letting businesses excavate the area for clay and the pit allowed the house to be flooded.
We are animals. What is natural? A hurricane is a mix of nature and culture. The age we live in is the Anthropocene. We live in deep time ages mapped out over millions of years indicating the prehistoric geological character of the planet. There have been 10,000 plus years of humanity. We came in the Holocene defined by stability and predictable conditions of achievement made possible by conditions on earth. Because of human action we are now the number one force for climate change. We are out control. We left the Holocene. We don't know how long it will last. If Katrina is natural or cultural can't be answered in the Anthropocene.
I said metaphorically nature and humans are brought together in the novel.
New Orleans was entirely created by humanity and built below the waterline. Some say the Anthropocene began in 1492.
Naming hurricanes. I said hurricane Hazel changed the shape of some Toronto neighbourhoods.
Uncanny means familiar but off. Robots made to look like humans. Uncanny valley describes the relation between human like robots and the emotional response they evoke. Environmental uncanny is related to the sublime. Uncanny valley. Fake spectators at sport events. When authors include a storm the literature is relegated to sci fi. Storms are too convenient. But it's weird to not have storms. Salvage the Bones is based on a real hurricane. Bosch mansion of literature and the doghouse of sci fi.
I mentioned the parallel between Jesmyn Ward's Salvage The Bones and Zadie Smith's “On Beauty.” In both cases a black female author fom our era draws from the work of white male Modernist writers from a hundred years ago. I wondered if it's a pattern or coincidence. Sarah thinks they are salvaging the authors William Faulkner and E.M. Forster.
I probably won't go to the optional tutorial on December 9. I would be better off working from home to prepare for my exams.
I rode to Yonge and Bloor, south to College, west to Dovercourt, south to Queen and west to Gladstone to stop at Freshco. I got five bags of grapes, a half pint of raspberries, five year old cheddar, a can of peaches, skyr, hot salsa, three bags of milk, kettle chips and Earl Grey tea.
I weighed 87 kilos before lunch.
I weighed 87.3 kilos at 17:45. I got caught up on my journal at 18:00.
I read Act 2 Scene 1 of Othello. While they are waiting for Othello to arrive in Cyprus Iago banters with Desdemona, making risqué jokes about women. Othello arrives and there's sweet talk with Desdemona before they leave together. Then Iago plots with Rodorigo against Cassio and Othello. Then when Iago is alone he tells the audience that he thinks Othello has been fucking his wife and he wants to fuck his.
I read chapter five of Salvage the Bones. Esch is feeling more pregnant but only looks like she's gaining weight, Skeet gives the dewormer to China. Skeet's father tries to get rough with Skeet and Skeet has to stop China from attacking him. The father says he wishes she had because then he would have had her shot.
I had a potato with gravy and two chicken drumsticks while watching an episode of The Addams Family.
In this story Cousin Melancholia comes to visit Morticia because her fiance Fred took his ring back and went to join the Foreign Legion. Gomez tries to find a husband for Melancholia from among his many companies but with no luck. Lurch and Thing aren't interested in marriage either. Meanwhile the company Ferguson, Riche and Fisher wants to send their lawyer Harvey to get Gomez to sign away the oil rights to some land in Kenya. Harvey has dealt with the Addamses before and doesn't want to go. But when he lets it slip on the phone that he's a bachelor Gomez invites him over. Morticia gives Melancholia a makeover to dress her up in one of her own gowns with the trail that looks like a splatter of black on the floor. Grandmama keeps throwing her love dust on both of them. Harvey keeps trying to get away but Melancholia grabs him and starts kissing him. Just then her boyfriend Fred comes in. He explains he took her ring back because it was turning her finger green and now gives her one of brass. He didn't join the foreign legion but rather the American Legion. Fred then punches and knocks Harvey out and he has won Melancholia back.
Melancholia was played by Hazel Shermet, who was both an actor and singer who performed in theatre, on radio, in films and on TV for several decades. She provided the voice of Henrietta Hippo on The New Zoo Review and of Mrs baily on Jem. She appeared in over a hundred TV commercials. She was the last actor to play Miss Duffy on “Duffy's Tavern.” This was where she met her future husband Larry Rhine who was the head writer. She was a regular on the radio show “Jack and Cliff.” She was the star of two musical shows on local television in New York on which she would sing audience requests.

December 3, 1991: I finally got a call from Canada Post asking me to sort Christmas mail at midnight

Thirty years ago today

On Tuesday I finally got a call from the post office asking me to work sorting mail that night at midnight. Then I got a call from Wayne telling me to be at River and Dundas at 6:45 on Wednesday. When it rains it pours.
I worked on projects, collage, and cleaning my place.
It looked like there was a good chance of making it to New Brunswick that Christmas and I'd be able to pay Nancy's fare. She'd been concerned about taking the baby on the bus but it was only a twelve-hour trip so I didn't see what the big deal was. I thought that I'd better call my dad before we went in case he was going to be somewhere else when we arrived. I didn't reach Nancy to talk about it.
I left for work at 23:15.

Frozen Elvis

On Wednesday morning I woke up at around 2:30 and found a bedbug on me. It was small and dark, probably sick, and didn't have any blood inside and though I didn't see another I felt like I could feel them and smell them all night. That doesn't mean they were really there though.
I worked out the chords to most of “Mangos” by Serge Gainsbourg. There's just a repeated segment at the end and I'm pretty sure I'll have that done on Thursday.
I weighed 88.3 kilos before breakfast. I logged in to the Shakespeare lecture. I think Professor Lopez said our exam will be available to download on Monday. Once we've downloaded it we have a certain amount of time to complete and upload it. I'll probably download it on the latest day possible so I have more time to prepare.
I still have too much reading to do before decoding my lectures from last week or this week.
Right after the lecture I got dressed and headed down to the Parkdale Queen West Community Health Centre to find out what time my appointment was. I had to wait a few minutes to talk with the dental receptionist. It's a good thing I came then because it turned out that my appointment was for 11:00.
I had time to ride to Freedom Mobile and deposit $45 in my account towards changing my pre-paid phone plan to one with less data. Then to go home and have a quick breakfast of peanut butter on a slice of Bavarian sandwich bread and spoon size shredded wheat with canned peaches and honey. I flossed, mouth washed and brushed my teeth, and then headed back to the health centre. I had to wait at least half an hour anyway.
Dr. Lake was quite friendly and had a good manner. She froze the upper central part of my mouth and over about an hour did fillings for about four of my centre top teeth. One in particular on the right side was embarrassingly black but she got the cavity drilled out and filled it. On our next appointment, she'll do the rest of the fillings. I told her that one of my upper left teeth was grinding against a lower one. She told me to remind her next time and she'd adjust the bite of that tooth. She also said that Ontario is going to allow the dental hygienists to work again and I could probably get an appointment sometime in the New Year. That was good news.
I'd thought that my next appointment was for December 10 but the receptionist said it was on the morning of December 15. I said I couldn't do it. He said they are booked until February but he might be able to switch me with another patient and get me in for Friday, January 7. That should be okay for me if I can get it. My classes in the new year are on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. I'll call him on Friday to see if the switch was made.
When I got home I looked in the mirror to see my mouth looked a lot better and whiter than it has looked for years. But it was funny because my mouth was still frozen and so it wouldn't open fully on the right side. It gave me an Elvis smile and so I took a few pictures.
I called Freedom Mobile and changed my pre-paid plan since I didn't use all the data in the plan from last month. I asked for the cheapest plan with some data and there's one where I get ten gigs of data and unlimited calling and texting and as a Black Friday deal, it's $30 for the next six months. I took that one.
I weighed 87.5 kilos before lunch. I had Breton crackers with five-year-old cheddar and a glass of blackberry drink but it was very hard to eat with a frozen mouth because I couldn't tell the difference between the food and my lips. They both felt like foreign objects in my mouth and I couldn't tell clearly if the food was going in or sitting outside on my lips.
My mouth was still a bit frozen when I woke up from my siesta but not too bad. I took a bike ride to Yonge and Bloor, south to College, west to Ossington, south to Queen, and then west. I weighed 87.2 kilos when I got home.
There was an email from Professor Lopez telling me he would review my essay to see if my mark was fair and get back to me by Friday afternoon.
I got caught up on my journal at around 20:00.
I made pizza on naan with arrabbiata sauce, pepperoni, and extra old cheddar. I had it with a beer while watching an episode of The Addams Family.
In this story a Washington bureaucrat named Harris is giving two Russian diplomats a tour of the United States. But they think they are not seeing the typical US family. Harris agrees to take them anywhere they want and so they randomly stick a pin in the phone book and it hits the Addams family. Harris knows the Addamses and doesn't want the Russians to go there which of course makes them want to go there. They see Morticia feeding hamburger to her plant Cleopatra, they meet Thing and then they meet Lurch. They think the intelligent plant, the hand without a body, and Lurch show that US scientists have developed the three stages of robotics. They also see Pugsley demonstrate his real, working disintegrator gun. The Russians decide that the United States is far more advanced than they thought and they send a message back to Russia that they should tread carefully in relation to the United States.

December 2, 1991: It took fifteen minutes to make a mess and then hours to clean it up

Thirty years ago today

On Monday I went down to legal Aid to make my first payment.
I knocked on the door of The Foundation but there was no answer.
I walked to the bookstore and looked through the comics, then I got a coffee and headed home.
I checked with my lawyer and was told that he would call me back but he didn't.
I finished the day off with projects and cleaning.
Cleaning was endless. It seemed like it took fifteen minutes to make a mess and then hours to clean it up.
I couldn't afford to pay my library fine for the books I had out and so I decided to just keep them until I could give them the money.
In my National Geographic scrapbook I was covering the Normal Conquest.
In my Gurdjieff notes I was in the middle of 1924.

John Astin

On Tuesday morning I worked out the chords to the chorus of “Mangos” by Serge Gainsbourg. I just have another verse and the finale left and so I might be able to finish it on Wednesday.
I weighed 87.4 kilos before breakfast. I ate two oranges and four clementines and drank half a cup of coffee before heading for the penultimate US Literature lecture. It was snowing and the first time I've ridden my bike downtown in the snow in a couple of years. I wore an extra pair of socks.
While waiting for the lecture I was trying to find a program for playing ebooks on my laptop. I have Calibre on my computer and so I downloaded that but then I found out that it doesn't work on Windows 7. But I discovered that I can upload any ebook to an app on Google Chrome and and read the book that way. US Lit lecture.
Next week would be our last.
I'm not going to post the lecture because I don't have time to decode my short hand right now.

The professor said that the pregnant narrator of Salvage the Bones is 15. I told her I thought for sure she'd said she was 14. She didn't seem to think it mattered and I agreed that objectively there may be no difference between 14 and 15 but in terms of society and legality and the age of consent it's the difference between a child and a woman.
I told her the ending of Salvage the Bones seemed a bit Disneyesque to me or “Lassie Come Home.” I also said I found the dog fighting disturbing. She said the author said it's part of the culture and not something she has to answer for. I said the people in the story are also thieves and so they are certainly not meant to be conventionally sympathetic.

It had stopped snowing when I left the Sidney Smith Building and so I rode to Yonge and Bloor and then south. But instead of going all the way to King I went west on College. College to Brock is a more interesting ride than King to Dunn, so I think I'll go that way from now on.
When I got home I went out to buy a litre of milk.
There was no response yet from Professor Lopez about my request for a review of my unreasonable Shakespeare essay mark of B-.
I weighed 87.4 kilos before lunch.
I got caught up on my journal at 18:20.
            I weighed 87.1 kilos at 18:30.
I know I have two dental appointments approaching and I thought that the first was December 5. I looked for the card they gave me but I couldn't find it. I checked my blog to see when the last appointment was because I was sure I'd mentioned the appointments. I discovered my first appointment is tomorrow but I didn't know what time. I wouldn't have taken it at the time of my lecture so it must be either later in the morning or in the afternoon. I'll have to go there after my lecture to find out because I can't call since I haven't paid for my December phone plan yet.
I re-read Act 1 Scene 3 of Othello. Brabanzio tries to get Othello busted for stealing his daughter away but Desdemona proves she went willingly. The Duke needs Othello as a general because Venice is at war with the Turks to Brabanzio is politely dismissed.
I coated chicken drumsticks with olive oil, salt and paprika and grilled them in the oven. I had one with a potato and gravy while watching an episode of The Addams Family.
In this story Wednesday gets in trouble for using her Uncle Fester's blasting caps because her own aren't powerful enough. She is punished by not being allowed to play with her spider for two weeks. She decides to run away from home. But Pugsley tells her she should only pretend to run away and hide in his room. Pugsley writes a note for her, “Dear Mother and Father, I hate you, Love Wednesday.” Morticia and Gomez call the police missing persons office and tell Sgt. Haley their daughter is missing. But while Haley is on his way over there they find out from Fester that Wednesday is faking. They tell Haley that Wednesday is home after all but he's pissed off that they've wasted his time. Morticia and Gomez decide to punish Wednesday with psychology. They pretend she's still missing and stand outside Pugley's room so she can overhear they've given up on her. But Pugsley assures Wednesday that their parents are using psychology. Wednesday decides to show them and really run away. Wednesday later gets picked up by the police and taken to missing persons where she meets Haley. When he realizes who she is he goes back to the Morticia and Gomez to tell them he has Wednesday. But they insist he is mistaken and deluded. Meanwhile Fester finds and claims Wednesday at the police station. Haley tells Morticia and Gomez he'll give them his badge if Wednesday is home. But then they hear Wednesday and Fester playing outside and when Haley sees it he turns in his badge and wanders off in a daze, telling them to report a missing detective.
Gomez Addams was played by John Astin who started out studying math but switched to theatre. He worked in plays and TV commercials. He played the dance chaperone in the film West Side Story. He starred in the TV movie comedy western “Evil Roy Slade.” He co-starred with Jodie Foster in “Freaky Friday.” He played two parts in The National Lampoon's European Vacation. He played Dr Gangreen in the Killer Tomato movies. He co-starred in The Frighteners. He reprised the voice of Gomez on the Addams Family animated series and played Grandpa Addams on The New Addams Family. He replaced Frank Gorshin as The Riddler on Batman. He was married to Patty Duke from 1972 until 1985. He now runs the theatre department at Johns Hopkins University and is a full professor. The theatre was renamed after him. He's also the leader of a Buddhist group and an expert on Edgar Allan Poe.

December 1, 1991: I was enjoying putting my loose writing into The Hopeless Casebook

Thirty years ago today

On Sunday I didn't get to see my daughter. Maybe it was just because I couldn't get through to Nancy or perhaps they went away. I didn't remember which was the reason because wrote this two weeks later. Anyway, it was very frustrating.
I thought that Nancy must have gotten my lawyer's letter by then. He said he'd call her.
I think that I watched TV, worked on projects, and masturbated.
I was cutting images of and information on public figures from the encyclopaedia and pasting it into a book.
I had almost finished my first reading of Astrology For The Millions.
I would soon be drawing material for my autobiography from my 1990 diary. I was enjoying putting my loose writing into The Hopeless Casebook.
