Reginald Denny

On Wednesday morning I almost had both “Le petit Lauriston” by Boris Vian and “Sacha Distel et Jean-Pierre Cassel’s Song and Dance” by Serge Gainsbourg memorized. I think there’s a good chance I’ll have both songs in my head on Thursday.
I played my Martin acoustic guitar during song practice for the first of two sessions. It’s still going out of tune as soon as it’s strummed. Now the machine for the B string has gotten very stiff.
I weighed 86.4 kilos before breakfast.
Around midday I went over to the hardware store to get another bucket of drywall compound and to also buy a set of doorknobs for my bathroom door. I got a shiny black set that I think will fit and it came with a lock and key. I’ll probably try to install it on Friday.
I weighed 87.35 kilos before lunch. I had saltines with roasted red pepper hummus and a glass of low sugar iced tea.
In the afternoon I took a bike ride downtown and on the way back stopped at Flying Books at Shaw and College to inquire about them ordering my book. They were quite friendly but for them, as for the other handful of bookstores I’ve tried so far, my publisher Ekstasis Editions is too small to be part of their supply chain. It’s very frustrating to be published but nonetheless having my book unavailable except directly from the publisher. Later I emailed Allan Briesmaster, who was published by Ekstasis last year and has been before that, to find out if he knows what bookstores will order from Ekstasis.
I stopped at Freshco where I bought seven bags of red grapes, a pack of raspberries, and some bananas.
            I weighed 86.8 kilos at 18:45.
I was caught up on my journal at 20:30. I made pizza on a slice of multigrain sandwich bread with marinara sauce, the last of my parmesan and my last potato sliced and boiled. I had it with a beer while watching the first quarter of Batman: The Movie from 1966.
A yacht is bringing a revolutionary invention to Gotham. Batman hears that the inventor on the yacht is in danger. Batman and Robin take the Batcopter out to sea to hover above the yacht while Batman descends on a ladder but just before his feet would touch the deck, the boat disappears and Batman finds he is thigh deep in the water. He radios Robin to take the ladder back up but as Batman’s legs rise out of the water a fake looking shark has hold of his right leg up to the knee. Batman punches at the shark but it won’t let go and so he calls for the Bat Repellent Bat Spray. Robin climbs down the ladder with an aerosol can and four rungs above Batman hangs by his knees to pass the can down. The shark repellent causes the shark to let go and when it hits the water it explodes. Later a press conference is held in Commissioner Gordon’s office as Batman evades giving out much information. Comrade Kitanya Irenya Tatanya Karenska Alisoff from the Moscow Bugle asks Batman to remove his mask for a picture. Batman explains that he can’t. She and the other reporters leave. Batman tells Gordon and O’Hara that the warning that the inventor Commodore Schmidlapp is in danger was a decoy to lure him into a trap, but a trap set by who, they don’t know. Batman asks for a list of super criminals that are currently not in prison. They are Penguin, Joker, Riddler, and Catwoman. They think it’s possible that all four may have teamed up. Batman and Robin head for the Bat Cave to consult the Bat Computer. Meanwhile on a dock, Kitka arrives in a taxi and enters a rowdy tavern. She climbs a stairs and is greeted by a henchman as Catwoman. She slaps his face and reminds him never to use her real name in public. She enters a room where her criminal colleagues are arguing. She reminds them that they must be united. She asks how their prisoner is and she is told that Schmidlapp still doesn’t know that he’s been kidnapped and continues to believe that he is on a cruise at sea. The captive in question rings for his tea and Joker brings it. Schmidlapp’s view from his cabin is a fogbound ocean off the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. Joker tells him he doesn’t know how long they will be stuck there but the good natured abductee says it will give him a chance to catch up on his reading. He mentions his invention that is stored in the hold and worth millions. Outside Schmidlapp’s porthole we see that his ocean view is merely a projection enhanced by a fog machine and the sound of water. Back upstairs the criminals anticipate that Batman and Robin will be investigating the disappearing yacht soon. Penguin, Joker and Riddler board their submarine. Meanwhile in the Batcave, Batman concludes that the yacht was able to disappear because it was only a projection from a disguised buoy. They head for the Batboat to investigate. On Penguin’s submarine the penguin-headed periscope rises to watch the Batboat arrive at the projection buoy. The criminals prepare homing torpedoes. Penguin activates the magnet inside the buoy, trapping Batman and Robin by the metal in their utility belts. The first torpedo is launched. Batman uses a transmitter that reverses the polarity and sends out waves of super energy to explode the torpedo before it reaches them. Another is fired and again it explodes prematurely. But with the third firing the transmitter runs out of battery power and the torpedo gets through. However, by chance a porpoise comes between the torpedo and the buoy and Batman and Robin are able to escape. Batman calls the Pentagon to find out if they’ve sold any surplus submarines recently. It’s confirmed that they sold one to P.N. Gwynne. The submarine launches a Polaris missile that leaves writing in the sky in the form of riddles: “What does a turkey do when he flies upside down?” Answer: “He gobbles up”. “What weighs six ounces, sits in a tree and is very dangerous?” Batman asks what creature would gobble a bird in a tree and the answer is a cat. Batman concludes that the mastermind of this plot is Catwoman and the goal is world conquest. Meanwhile Catwoman is meeting with the others and confirms that their goal is the snatch the UN Security Council. The Riddler has a plan to trap and kill Batman and Robin with Catwoman as the bait. She as Kitka will lure Bruce Wayne to be kidnapped and thus cause Batman to try to rescue him. Kitka comes to Bruce with some riddles she found slipped under the door of her borrowed penthouse. Bruce invites Kitka to dinner. I stopped watching for the night at this point.
Schmidlapp was played by Reginald Denny in his last film role. He was the son of W.H. Denny a member of the Gilbert and Sullivan Company. He made his stage debut at the age of 6. He made his film debut in British pictures in 1912. He starred in The Reckless Age, Skinner’s Dress Suit, and What Happened to Jones?. He toured with the Bandemann Opera Company as a baritone. He made his Hollywood debut in 1915. He starred in the boxing film The Leather Pushers. His first talking picture was Red Hot Speed in 1929. He starred in the filmed radio show The Voice of Hollywood #3. In silent films he had lead roles but in talkies his British accent kept him from being the star. He was a stunt pilot in the 1920s with The 13 Black Cats. In the early 1930s he became an aviation pioneer in drone technology. He also had a successful model plane shop in Hollywood. During the war he produced 15,000 radio controlled target drones for the US Army for anti-aircraft target training. One of his employees at the drone business was Norma Jeane Mortensen, who was spotted during a photo shoot of the drones and this led to her movie career and subsequent name change to Marilyn Monroe.
