October 10, 1995: My co-host quit because I forgot her birthday

Thirty years ago today

On Tuesday I posed from 15:00 to 17:35 for an after school drawing session at Central Technical School. I bought a brownie cake and took it with me to the Gladstone Hotel. I set up the Art Bar for my Orgasmic Alphabet Orgy writers open stage. I stuck wooden matches for candles in the cake for Paul Goldberg, whose birthday would be on Sunday, October 15. During the open stage we voted to change our start time from 22:00 to 21:00. When it was Paul’s turn to read I lit the matches and presented the cake to Paul. He unenthusiastically said, “Thanks”. What I didn’t realize at the time was that it was my co-host, Mary Milne’s birthday. There had been some tension between us lately but she had always remembered my birthday and so I guess it was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Mary left early without reading. When I got home there was a message from her on my answering machine: “Go fuck yourself! I will never go near that open stage again! I feel I have to distance myself from your malignant negativity”. I was both disturbed and relieved at the same time. Later I called and tried to talk with her but to no avail. I corrected her that my negativity is benign and not malignant.
