March 8, 1994: Allan Appleby gave us the green light to run our writers open stage at his Gladstone Hotel

Thirty years ago today

On Tuesday Mary Milne and I met with Allan Appleby, the co-owner with his brother Herbert of the Gladstone Hotel. He told us some of the history of the Gladstone, such as how when it was built it was the last place that one could get a drink between Toronto and Hamilton and that during Prohibition Al Capone used to store whisky there before smuggling it down to Chicago. He said they inherited the hotel from their father who used to own the Victory Burlesque Theatre where famous comedians like Phil Silvers used to perform. Allan gave us the green light to start running our Orgasmic Alphabet Orgy weekly writers open stage in the Art Bar next Tuesday. We were excited about it because it was a much bigger space than we had at Mudds Cabaret and it was a closed room.
