Last Refuge of the Neanderthals

On Saturday morning I published my translation of “Souviens-toi de m'oublier” (Remember to Forget Me) by Serge Gainsbourg on my blog and on Facebook. I then memorized the first two verses and the chorus of his song “What tu dis qu'est-ce que tu say?” The song plays around with French and English mixed together and so in my translation I’ve reversed it so that all of his English parts are in French, and all his French parts are in English, with the title: “Qu'est-ce que you speak, what do you dis?” I weighed 84.8 kilos before breakfast.
At around midday, I put my Kodiaks and my sandals in a bag and rode down to Cowan and King to the little store that repaired my sandals a few years ago. I was disappointed but not entirely surprised to find that the place had either moved or gone out of business.
I went to No Frills where I bought seven bags of grapes, a pack of five-year-old cheddar, a strawberry-rhubarb pie, white corn, and black bean salsa, a can of dark roast coffee, and a box of spoon size shredded wheat.
When I got home, I did a web search for Parkdale shoe repair and found there’s a place called Sole Survivor on Noble. I’ll check them out next week.
I weighed 84.4 kilos before lunch. I had the rest of my Ritz crackers with five-year-old cheddar and a glass of limeade.
In the afternoon I took a bike ride to Yonge and Bloor, south to Queen and then home. I wore my new Wrangler cargo shorts and they look pretty good.
            I weighed 84.2 kilos at 17:00.
I threw away a whole bag of grapes because they tasted strongly like insecticide. The second bag of grapes that I pulled out tasted fine.
I got caught up on my journal at 18:45.
I worked on my Movie Maker project. I split the instrumental that comes after I shout “Shock therapy” into one-second sections and added between them one-second clips of the 1940s shock therapy documentary. The problem is that after I split and paste there is freezing in the editing timeline. I’m pretty sure the freezing won’t show in the final movie but it throws me off. One of the reasons I bought a new computer with more ram was to fix this problem but it seems to be a compatibility issue in Moviemaker between different formats of clips. It doesn’t have anything to do with my computer.
I had my last egg, sunny side up, with toasted Bavarian sandwich bread and a beer while watching two episodes of Astro Boy.
In the first story, Astro Boy, Astro Girl, and Mr. Pompus are traveling in Africa. Meanwhile a movie is being made about Starzi the baboon boy. But the robot playing the role malfunctions. The director stumbles upon Astro Girl and she looks just like Starzi. She is excited about being in a movie and so she agrees right away.
Astro Girl is dressed as a boy and is swinging from vine to vine when suddenly she is grabbed by a shadowed figure who is also swinging from vine to vine. The figure who abducts her turns out to be a woman clothed only in leopard skin. She lands on a saber-toothed tiger and rides to the foot of a mountain where she shouts a signal upwards. A wooden platform is lowered and she, the tiger, and Astro Girl are raised up by a pulley system. At the top, they look down into a large crater that contains a natural paradise.
The woman says her name is Rhiba and welcomes her to the place of eternal life. Rhiba says she is over 30,000 years old and every living thing in the valley is as old or older than her. The woman thinks Astro Girl is a boy and says from now on she will be her prince. Astro Girl says she has to go but Rhiba has her cavemen stop her.
Meanwhile, Astro Boy and Pompus are looking for Astro Girl. In an ancient temple, Astro Boy finds the notes left by an archaeologist who says he discovered a hidden valley beyond the mountains. When Astro Boy tries to fly there he loses power and so they find another way in through the caves. Once inside the secret valley, Astro Boy regains his power. He needs it because suddenly they are attacked by dinosaurs. Astro Boy is beating the dinosaurs when Rhiba tells him to stop.
Rhiba reveals that her cavemen have captured Pompus and will kill him if Astro Boy doesn’t surrender. He says he is looking for his sister but Rhiba still believes she is the only girl there. Then Astro Girl as Starzi tells the cavemen to capture Astro Boy and Pompus and throw them in jail. Later Astro Girl comes and tells them she was pretending to not know them in order to protect them. She says she feels sorry for Rhiba because she is the only woman in the valley and she is lonely.
That night they try to sneak away but when they are discovered Astro Boy begins to carry them in flight. But he hits an invisible barrier and falls back into the valley. Pompus is separated and captured and Rhiba orders him killed for taking away her prince. Astro Boy is out of energy but Astro Girl gives him some of hers. Astro Boy rescues Pompus. Astro Girl is found incapacitated but Rhiba thinks her prince is dead. Astro Boy explains that she can be revived outside of the valley and so Rhiba says they can leave.
But suddenly a giant spiked sphere with an electronic eye emerges from the ground. It says no one may leave. It came from the Planet Tempus Fugit 100,000 years ago and has the ability to stop time. Its mission is to slow human beings down. Astro Boy tries to attack but is easily repelled. Rhiba however is able to jump onto the machine and smash its eye with an ax. That allows Astro Boy to destroy the machine but when he does so everything in the valley withers to dust, including Rhiba.
Rhiba’s servants seemed to be Neanderthals. Current evidence shows that the last Neanderthals lived in caves in Gibraltar 42,000 years ago.
In the second story, Astro Boy is on his way to see Dr. Elefun’s new speed of light rocket when he sees thousands of people walking like zombies all in the same direction along the highway. Even mothers are abandoning their children to join the crowd. Astro Boy gets his brother Jetto to take care of the children while he goes to tell Elefun. The crowd is headed like lemmings for the edge of Mount Tah. Astro Boy and Elefun go to investigate but Elefun is caught in the same spell as the others. Astro Boy follows along.
At the edge of the mountain, the first of the group walks off the cliff but continues walking along a beam of light like a pathway upward into a cloud. Behind the cloud is a spaceship which they all enter. Astro Boy follows.
Meanwhile, below in the city, a robot named Mr. Machine addresses an assembly of robots. All of the humans have left the city and so Machine proposes that the robots take over. Astro Boy’s father reminds him that robots exist to serve mankind, but the majority supports Machine.
On the spaceship, Astro Boy manages to revive Elefun and they make their way to a control room. From there they see they are now traveling away from Earth on a course for Asteroid X. When Elefun tries to change the controls, a section of the machinery emerges as a powerful robot guard. After a difficult battle Astro Boy defeats the robot.
The ship lands on the asteroid and Astro Boy and Elefun discover that the exit leads to a tunnel beneath the asteroid. Below they find several rooms, each containing a different strange creature from another world. Several of the creatures break loose and attack Astro Boy.
Meanwhile Machine has taken the other robots aboard Elefun’s light-speed rocket and he’s trying to prove to them by controlling the spaceship himself that they don’t need humans. But the ship goes out of control and Machine admits he needs direction from humans after all. Just then Elefun radios for help. He gives Machine instructions for operating the ship so they can come and rescue him.
Astro Boy is having difficulty fighting the creatures because he is running low on energy. One very powerful flower is getting the best of Astro Boy when Machine, Jetto, and the other robots arrive with weapons that destroy the plant. Suddenly they hear crying and a little boy with wings instead of arms emerges. He is upset because they have destroyed his specimens, which he was collecting for a homework assignment. Elefun appeases the child with many specimens from his own lab on Earth.
I did a search and didn’t find any bedbugs before bed. That’s two days in a row.
