I memorized the sixth verse of “Glass securit” (Security Glass) by Serge Gainsbourg and continued to work on revising my translation.
I played my Kramer electric guitar during song practice for the second of two sessions.
I weighed 86.6 kilos before breakfast, which is the heaviest I’ve been in the morning in ten days.
I worked on updating my journal.
I weighed 86.6 kilos before lunch. It’s been eleven days since I’ve tipped the scale that much. I had naan with a sliced tomato and five-year-old cheddar with a glass of lemonade and cranberry juice.
In the afternoon I took a bike ride downtown and back. Yonge Street is still closed from Shuter to Queen so this time I turned left on Shuter and went down Victoria to Richmond. Victoria has a spider’s web of streetcar tracks a cyclist has to carefully manoeuvre over.
I weighed 86.3 kilos at 17:30 and that’s the most it’s been in the evening for twelve days.
I didn’t get caught up on my journal until 19:40.
I re-read more of Beowulf up to the point where the dragon is introduced.
I made pizza on naan with Basilica sauce, a chopped chicken burger, and five-year-old cheddar. I had it with a beer while watching season 1, episode 7 of Burke’s Law.
Betsy Richards is drunk in a beach house and calls to Gil who is surfing to tell him that it’s time for booze. Gil comes in and says he’s leaving her for her sister. Betsy is indifferent. She takes a drink and dies. Burke, in a gallery is teaching a beautiful date about Picasso when he gets the call. Betsy was poisoned with cyanide. They go to the Richards estate and the woman at the piano is identical to Betsy except for her blonde hair. She’s her sister Meredith. Upstairs there is laughter and Meredith says it’s her sister Olivia. Olivia is also identical to Betsy except for her black hair. Olivia is laughing about Betsy’s death with her boyfriend Nels Manning, saying, “How square!” She mentions her sister Jane is in the greenhouse. They go to see her and she is also identical to Betsy but with glasses and a few nervous twitches. All four Richards sisters with distinctly different personalities are played by the brilliant Carolyn Jones, who later became famous for playing Morticia Addams on The Addams Family. Jane is worried about her bonsai tree. Tim happens to be an expert on that topic as he is on everything else and he helps her with the plant. She says her cyanide has been missing ever since Gil was playing with it, and that a knife disappeared as well. She says he’s going to marry Olivia. She says Betsy is silly for being dead. Later at the station Les tells Burke that Meredith is in charge of the family’s money. They go to see Manning in the bar. He’s shaking horribly because he’s yet to have his first drink of the day. He says he picked Gil for Olivia because he knows Gil will fail and he wants Olivia back. Meredith’s Psychology professor Alan Steiner calls for Burke and tells him Meredith is in mortal danger because she shows signs of fearing for her life. He’s also in love with Meredith. He became interested in psychology when he was a patient in a mental hospital. The sisters’ invalid Aunt Harriet also lives with them and screams at random moments. Burke goes to talk with her. Harriet pretends to doze off. Burke eliminates Gil, Manning and Steiner as suspects. The murderer is either Harriet or one of the three sisters. Burke talks to Meredith who says that Gil was actually trying to marry her and not Olivia. Les is watching over Harriet. She says anything or anyone twisted should be allowed to die. Tim helps Jane trim her bonsai and then she grabs a knife and says, “Let’s kill it!” Burke goes on a date with Olivia. She says every man is her type. She says she never raids her sisters’ men but Burke points out that Manning was with Betsy first. Olivia says it was always understood Betsy was for openers. Burke is at the Richards house when he hears a shot. Meredith is slumped over in her car with a bullet hole in the windshield but she’s alright. Someone rigged a shotgun to fire. Then Harriet has a heart attack and dies but only Burke, the doctor and the nurse know that. Burke wants them to keep it quiet. The doctor says Harriet talked just before dying about one of the sisters as not being able to cry tears. Burke has Olivia escorted out of the house but then tells her she’s not really under arrest because he knows who did it. Burke returns to the house and finds Meredith with a knife in Harriet’s bedroom. She still thinks her aunt is alive. Burke stops her from stabbing the dead body and she goes peacefully.
Amos Burke is played by Gene Barry, who as a child was a violin virtuoso. He graduated valedictorian. After breaking his arm he gave up violin and became a baritone singer. He won a singing scholarship and then won Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts radio program. He named himself Gene Barry after John Barrymore. He made his Broadway debut in New Moon in 1942. In the 1950s after appearing on Hollywood Screen Test he was signed to Paramount. He co-starred in The Atomic City, Those Redheads From Seattle, and War of the Worlds. He co-starred in the final season of Our Miss Brooks playing a suave character that was a prelude to his later most famous roles. He starred in the TV series Bat Masterson from 1958 to 1961 (reprising that role in The Gambler Returns); Burke’s Law from 1963 to 1966 for which he won a Golden Globe (That show was reprised for two years in the 90s); and The Name of the Game from 1968 to 1971. In 1972 he starred in the British series The Adventurer. He formed Barry Films in the early 70s and produced The Second Coming of Suzanne. He starred in the musical version of La Cage aux Folles in 1978 and was nominated for a Tony. He retired to paint but returned to play Tom Cruise’s father in the remake of War of the Worlds. He was one of the supporters of Robert Kennedy who were there when he was assassinated.
