October 10, 1994: We discussed my idea for a Christmas play called "The Three Scrooges"

Thirty years ago today

On Thanksgiving Monday I had my daughter at my place until the early afternoon and then I took her back to her mother’s home in Scarborough. After dropping her off I headed downtown to the Café Verité to meet Adina at 18:00. We chatted for a while and then I went to Marjorie Robero’s place to meet with her, John Margerm and Yuri Kuchinski to discuss my plan for a collaborative Christmas play called “The Three Scrooges”. It’s a parody of “A Christmas Carole” but there are three Scrooges who happen to conjoined although they aren’t related. They are visited three times by the same ghost played by Marjorie because Heaven is on a budget and each time she tries to convince them how unimportant Christmas is except for the necessary commercialism. There was already a party going on when I arrived and it kept interfering with our meeting. Marjorie roasted a turkey and a duck. I got some good ideas written down. Marjorie wanted the play to be political, Yuri wanted to push buttons and to have the Antichrist born onstage, and John wanted to play the dummy but was uncomfortable with bringing issues into comedy. Then he went manic and started shouting about what a good debater he was. It was a strange and difficult, but I felt productive session. Yuri walked me to Spadina.
