Simon Oakland

On Thursday morning I wasn’t quite able to memorize the third verse of “Le rent' dedans” (The Pick-Up) by Serge Gainsbourg but I should have it nailed down tomorrow. After that there will only be three lines left to learn.
I weighed 88.2 kilos before breakfast.
I played my Martin Road Series for the second of four sessions and it went out of tune a lot.
I climbed on my stepladder to check yesterday’s paint job a little closer. The edges could use another coat but I think I might as well do the whole thing again. Although some experts online say one coat is enough, most say two is better.
I weighed 89.45 kilos before lunch.
I weighed 88.3 kilos at 18:40, which is the lightest I’ve been in the evening since October 26.
I was caught up in my journal at 19:40.
I finished listening to Evil Empire by Rage Against the Machine and it’s really not bad. The other side of the cassette is Energy, the only album by Operation Ivy, which later became Rancid. The music is ska-punk and more melodic than punk rock usually is. I haven’t finished listening.
I reviewed the song practice video of my acoustic performance of “Laisses-en un peu pour les autres” on September 21, 2024 and the take at 11:00 in part B was not bad. I also watched “Leave Some for Everyone Else” from September 22 and the take at 7:45 in part B was okay.
I had a potato with gravy and my last piece of roast beef while watching episode 22 of Cain’s Hundred
Mobster Walter Hayes has just been released from prison after ten years. He’d expected to return to his old position with the Organization as the main loan shark in his territory. But he finds Peter Long and his men are in charge and that they handle loan sharking with less muscle than was common when Hayes was active. Hayes wants back in but Long only offers him a legitimate job in a warehouse. Hayes’ response is to threaten Long and to try to take over but his operation is very small as he only has his old buddy Rudy working with him. One day a young man Hayes doesn’t recognize approaches him and introduces himself as his son Jack. Jack was ten years old the last time Hayes saw him. Jack is somewhat emotionally distant but he does want to bond with his father. Hayes rents a hotel room for Jack adjacent to his and brings him into his organization. Jack works out constantly at the gym and he has two cronies who do the same and feel inclined to do whatever Jack yells them. With the added muscle in his organization Hayes is becoming more successful in challenging Long. But a man named Vulner owes Hayes money and Jack and his friends wait for him in the hallway of his building. They beat him and he falls down the stairs just as his daughter Rita, who is also Jack’s girlfriend walks in. Jack is arrested and the bail is $10.000. Hayes gets long to pay for Jack’s release on the condition that Hayes leaves town. Jack feels guilty about hurting Rita’s father and he gets out of the business. Hayes calls long and says he wants $100,000 to leave town or else he’ll spill what he knows about the Organization that he kept quiet when he went to prison for ten years. Hayes says his condition is that Long has to bring the money himself. Long comes with a gunman and kills Hayes, but even after he’s shot Hayes is laughing. Nicholas Cain has been bugging him about helping take down Peter Long and so he tipped Cain off about this meeting. Cain arrives and Long is arrested. It looks like Jack ends up with Rita.
Hayes was played by Simon Oakland, who began as a concert violinist. He made his uncredited film debut in The Desperate Hours in 1955. He made his credited film debut with a co-starring role in I Want to Live. He kept homes in both New York and LA so he could continue to work on Broadway as well as in Hollywood. He co-starred in The Thirty Fathom Grave, Bullitt, The Hunting Party, Wall of Noise, The Raiders, Chubasco, and happy Mothers Day Love George. He co-starred in the TV series Kolchak: The Night Stalker and Baa Baa Black Sheep (later named Black Sheep Squadron). He played Vern St Cloud on The Rockford Files. He was type cast as tough guys.
