January 30, 1996: I was invited to feature at "Partying into the 21st Century"


Thirty years ago today  

            On Tuesday evening as usual I hosted my Orgasmic Alphabet Orgy writers open stage in the Art Bar of the Gladstone Hotel. For the last several Tuesdays one of our regulars was a guy in glasses who never read any poetry but would just sit there during the readings and read a philosophy book. Recently though he’d started promoting an event called “Partying Into the 21st Century”, which would take place on February 3. He invited me to be one of the featured performers and urged me to make a political statement during my show. That night he distributed the flyers for the event, which read: 

            Club Saturnalia in association with Exoticapolitica, TransFORUM Magazine, LETS (Local Employment and Trading System), CIUT 89.5 FM, The McLuhan Centre, and LIFT (Low Income Families Together) presents an evening of unconventional entertainment. Partying Into the 21st Century: A Place for Renewal 183 Bathurst Street, suite 301 Members only 
            “If you’re not on the leading edge you’re taking up too much space.” (According to AI this is a quote from Dan L. Ritchie, who was an entrepreneur, the CEO of Westinghouse Broadcasting and a professor at the University of Denver). 
            Featuring: Avant-garde and globally inspired art and music: Djembe drumming, Indian classical music, the art of Sudanese painter Amir Shingray, Campbell D. Foster inventor of the electro-acoustic sheet metal feedback phone, pictures by culture worker M.A.D.R., folk music, etcetera!!! and Local political speakers and information booths/ Poetry/ Philosophy/ Weird Movies.
