Thirty years ago today

Norm and I spent the day making two pick-ups. We had lunch in front of my place because I'd forgotten my sweater and he dropped me off to retrieve it.
In the afternoon we went for coffee at the restaurant in the basement of the Marine Museum. He said that most people don’t realize while standing in big line-ups for food at the Exhibition that there is a reasonably priced restaurant with table service right there on the grounds. He said he never has to wait for a table there when he goes to the Ex. I had a tomato juice.
I weighed myself on the coin-operated scale at the Vina Pharmacy and I was 84.4 kilograms, which was the heaviest I’d been in a long time. I guessed it was a combination of the muscle that I’d built up and then fat on top of it. I still thought I looked lean and mean nonetheless.
When I got home I did a little bit of work on my collage and then I fell asleep. I got up feeling refreshed when Nancy came home from her Accounting class.
Nancy was reading Beelzebub’s Tales to His Grandson by George Gurdjieff. I was very proud of her.

Hoisted on His own Picard

On Thursday morning I finished working out the chords for “Yellow Star” by Serge Gainsbourg and started posting it on Christian's Translations. I did everything but upload the video.
I worked on my journal brought it up to only being a day behind.
Around midday I went to Freshco where I bought three bags of grapes, two pints of strawberries, two cans of peaches, a jug of orange juice and a carton of soymilk.
I had peanuts and soymilk for lunch.
In the afternoon I got caught up on my journal.
I had a very week wifi connection in the early evening and couldn’t post anything. I had to read my Indigenous Studies textbook instead. After about two hours things started to move again.
For dinner I had three potatoes and gravy while watching the first episode of Star Trek Picard.
Spoiler alert!
Picard is a retired admiral living a quiet life on his vineyard in France with his dog Number One and his friends Elnor and Raffi. Picard is having a lot of vivid and cryptic dreams about Data who died to save Picard in Star Trek Nemesis. Meanwhile a young woman named Dahj is having a quiet night at home with her boyfriend when suddenly assassins teleport into her apartment, kill her boyfriend and attack her, demanding information. They put a black sack over her head to restrain her but with her sight impaired she suddenly transforms into a fighting machine. Within seconds she has killed all of her assailants but when she removes the bag from her head she is surprised at what she has done. She has a vision of Jean Luc Picard as someone she can trust and she seeks him out. He graciously and sympathetically welcomes her in his home and she tells him what happened. She spends the night and that night Picard dreams he finds Data in the vineyard painting a picture of Dahj. When he wakes he finds that Dahj left in the middle of the night. The dream that Picard had sparked a memory and he goes to his storage unit where he sees that he has a painting of Dahj that Data had made decades ago and entitled it “Daughter”. Dahj calls her mother who tells her to go back to Picard but Dahj never told her that she had gone to him in the first place. Dahj hacks a very advanced holographic version of what we know as the internet and finds Picard's exact location. She comes to him and he tells her that he thinks she is a synthetic. She denies it because the Synthetics have been outlawed because of what they did to the Martian colony and even she thinks of them as murderers. He says he thinks she is Data’s daughter. Suddenly more assassins appear and they are clearly Romulan. Dahj kills them all but the last one spits a chemical on her that causes her to explode. Picard goes to the Daystrom Institute to talk with Dr Agnes Jurati about the possibility that Dahj was a synthetic. At first she denies the possibility but admits that she could have been made from data’s synthetic DNA. She adds that they were always produced as twins and so Dahj would have to have a twin sister. The scene changes to a Romulan reclamation site inside of a captured Borg Cube. There we see Dahj’s sister Soji who has just arrived to work as a researcher there.
Dahj is played by Isa Briones, who played Matt Dillon’s daughter in the movie “Takers”.

GG and I were supposed to deliver some office furniture to the Frost Building. But when we brought it up in the elevator the office manager rejected much of it because it was the wrong colour. By the time we took it back down to the truck it was lunchtime. I got some nice samosas from the India Palace.
After lunch we went to the Mowat Block to take some office stuff out but the loading dock was full and so we had to wait. When a space opened up GG was going to back the truck in but it wouldn’t start. We had to call Mimico for the mechanic to come downtown and fix it. By the time that happened it was already 15:00 and the dock was full again. We managed to remove three items before quitting time.

Anna-Lisa

For the last few years I’ve been watching every 1950s TV show from the United States. If they don’t fully download I keep the torrent on my computer for a year before watching them and so I still have a handful left to look at. But upon finishing the Zorro series I was pretty much done with the US. I moved on to Canadian 1950s shows but the only downloads I could find were a two and a half gig file of Wayne and Shuster and one episode of a show I’d never heard of called “Hudson’s Bay". Wayne and Shuster has downloaded 50% but the other one is just sitting there. Then on Wednesday morning just after midnight I moved on to 1950s TV shows from Britain and found an enormous torrent containing every episode of The Adventures of Robin Hood starring Richard Greene, which was a show I loved when I was a kid. I didn't have room for all 112 gigs and so I just started a download of the first ten of the 144 episodes. After the first full day it had only downloaded 4% so it will take a long time to be able to watch it.
During yoga that morning the dead skin around my puncture wound was hard as old paper.
I finished memorizing “Yellow Star” by Serge Gainsbourg and started working out the chords.
I worked on updating my journal, which was still more than a day behind.
I had the rest of a bag of tortilla chips with salsa for lunch but in wanting to finish them I overate a bit. My stomach was too full when I laid down for a siesta and on top of that the workers downstairs were directly under my bed again. When a pipe falls it hits the floor three times.
            I continued updating my journal.
For dinner I had three potatoes with gravy and a piece of strawberry-rhubarb pie while watching an episode of “Sugarfoot” that had only downloaded 91% but there weren’t very many glitches.
In this story from season one Tom Brewster is working as a ranch hand for his friend Sandy Randall. Sandy is sending for a Swedish mail order bride. When a travelling photographer comes around both Sandy and Tom have their portraits taken. When it comes time to put a copy of his photo in the mail to send to Ellie Peterson, Sandy is unhappy with his own appearance and so he sends Tom’s picture instead. Sandy nervously fires Tom on the day that Ellie is supposed to arrive. Tom is about to get on the train to leave when Ellie gets off and recognizes him from the photo. Thinking Tom is Sandy, Ellie immediately gives him a kiss. Sandy is afraid to tell Ellie about the mix-up and he begs Tom to stay until it can be cleared up. The next day Tom is attacked by a stranger in the barn who shoots Sandy while making his escape. Ellie nurses Sandy back to health, showing great tenderness towards him but he is still afraid to tell her that he is the one that sent for her.  Ellie confesses that the man who shot Sandy is her ex-boyfriend Deuce. She had left him in Colorado when he had shown himself to be a criminal but he is still obsessed with her. He is in town with two other men and planning to rob the local bank but he is distracted by the fact that Ellie is living nearby and about to get married. When Tom finally explains to Ellie that Sandy is her arranged groom she is not disappointed. Tom plots to capture Deuce by using Ellie as bait. They fix up the wagon with a “just married” sign and with tin cans trailing. Ellie is wearing her Swedish wedding dress and she and Sandy start out without letting Tom know. By the time Tom catches up with the wagon Deuce has Sandy tied up in the back and he’s pointing a gun at Tom. Deuce plots to use the “just married" wagon in town to start up a shiveree party among the locals, which would serve as a noisy distraction while they rob the bank. The ploy is successful but after the wagon is out of town and robbers ride up with Deuce’s horse. He is about to take Ellie when Tom shoots him. The posse catches the rest of the gang and Ellie and Sandy kiss.
There was derogatory reference to Swedes as “Squareheads”. I don’t recall ever having heard that expression. I keep looking in the mirror to see if I can figure out if it’s true.
Sandy was played by Charles Bronson.
Deuce was played by Pernell Roberts who played Adam on Bonanza and later starred in Trapper John MD.
Ellie was played by Norwegian born actor Anna-Lisa. She first came to the US as an au pair for a family in California and took up local theatre before being discovered. She was fairly successful in Hollywood on stage and as a guest star on TV series but at the age of forty-one she moved back to Norway to work as a puppeteer in Oslo.

Thirty years ago today

Norm and I worked with Aubrey and GG at the Mowat block and went into overtime. Norm dropped me off at my place on his way back to Mimico.
I did some shopping before going home.
Judy and Mia came over. Judy told me that she was pregnant at the age of fifty. She said she didn’t want the baby and wasn’t going to tell Alvis about it. She talked on my phone for two hours while Mia coloured and patted Siva. I didn’t get much work done with them here. I was making some soup when Nancy came home.
After Judy and Mia left Nancy and I discussed sensation. I showed her a simple exercise. I wished she were black because in many other ways she and I were very compatible.

Gurus

On Tuesday morning I finished posting my translation of “Est-ce est-ce si bon” by Serge Gainsbourg and memorized the first verse of his song “Yellow Star”. The yellow star in the song is the one that the Nazis forced the Jews to wear. Gainsbourg was about ten years old in occupied Paris when he was required to wear the yellow star. But the legend goes that in his young mind he was thrilled to wear the star because it allowed him to pretend to be a wild west sheriff.
I worked on getting caught up on my journal.
When the workmen started downstairs the first thing that I heard was the music of Queen blasting up through my floor. One of the guys sings along with the music and he’s pretty good. A week or so ago he started singing and I heard some call out, “Can you sing?” Since then I’ve often heard them voice their appreciation and today he put on a little concert for them. I could hear them cheering and shouting, “Encore!”
Around midday I was taking out the garbage when my neighbours Benji and Shankar were chatting in the hallway and ended up joining them for half an hour.  Shankar had put a still functional standing lamp in the hall and asked if I wanted it. I told that I have too much stuff already. He said he would put it out on the deck but I told him that if he does that Raja would just throw it in the garbage. I advised him to put it out on Queen Street because within minutes somebody would come along and take it.
We talked about Popeye’s moving in soon downstairs. Shankar suggested to Benji that Popeye’s isn’t my cup of tea based on a comment that I’d made earlier that Popeye’s would be very popular in Parkdale because there are a lot of black people here. I don’t know how he drew that conclusion. I love just about any cuisine that African Canadians tend to like.
Shankar asked about my time living at the Sivananda Yoga Ashram north of Montreal and wondered if Swami Visnudevananda was still alive at the time. I told him he was and although he was a good yoga teacher I found him to be an asshole. This led us to discuss several bogus gurus that became prominent in the late 20th Century such as Bagavan Sri Rajneesh, Satcha Dai Baba and the Hare Krishnas. I’d never asked before but I found out that Benji is a Hindu as well. He said that a lot of Guyanese people from India were forced to be Christians but that they held onto their traditions nonetheless.
I had to work that night at OCADU and so I boiled three potatoes beforehand so I’d have something ready to eat when I got home. I worked for Peter Maimik in the Illustration department at the top of the pencil box. Peter is one of the many TA instructors that work in that department. I worked for him once before back in the fall and he got so caught up in talking to individual students about their work that he forgot all about using me as a model for twenty minutes. When I arrived in the studio this time another TA that I’ve seen around for years was just packing up after his class. He took a moment to warn me that Peter is a little green and doesn’t quite know what he’s doing yet. I got the impression that Peter doesn’t get to have lunch at the same table as the other TAs.
It was a portrait class and so I didn’t have to disrobe. I just sat in a chair and did various twenty-minute poses from the waist up at different angles.
I got home at exactly 22:00 and started heating up dinner. I had potatoes and gravy while watching the season finale of Doctor Who.
            Spoiler Alert!!!
The Master takes the Doctor to the ruins of Gallifrey. He has killed everyone there and destroyed almost everything except for the knowledge Matrix. He traps the Doctor’s body in a paralysing device and then his consciousness takes hers into the Matrix where he shows her has learned from it about the true history of Gallifrey. The first Gallifreyan explore beyond that world was a woman named Tecteun who found on a remote planet a gateway to another dimension. Beneath the gateway she found an abandoned child who perhaps had fallen through the portal. She adopted the child and raised her as her own but one day a horrible accident took the child’s life. But miraculously the child regenerated into another child. Tecteun began to study the child and the work lasted over several of the child’s regenerations. After many years she discovered the secret of regeneration from the child’s DNA and then she tested it on herself by splicing it into her own body. As a result Tecteun became the first Gallifreyan to regenerate. With Tecteun’s help the population of Gallifrey developed an advanced civilization and learned to travel through time. She also gave them the ability to regenerate. The Doctor asks the Master what happened to the child. He laughs and seems surprised that she hasn’t figured out that she is the Timeless Child from the other dimension.
Meanwhile Graham, Yasmin and the refugees plot to escape the Cybership by removing the organic parts of some non-functioning Cybermen and disguising themselves with their armour.
The Cybermen attack the planet of the gateway and Ko Sharmas leads Ryan and Ethan to try to fight them off. They are almost defeated when Graham, Yasmine and friends teleport to the surface and save them.
The Master’s body and the other part of his consciousness has invited the Cybermen into Gallifrey where he proposes an alliance with their leader. The leader wants to elevate the Cybermen beyond having organic parts until they are pure machines. The Master is disappointed and tells him, “Then you’d be nothing but robots!” The Master uses a weapon that shrinks the Cyber leader down to an immobile doll. The Cyberium that had been in him leaves his body and the Master lets it into his. He them uses the Cyberium on the organic matter of all of the dead Gallifreyans to turn them into invincible Cybermen with the ability to regenerate.
The Doctor is still paralysed and trying figure out how to break free. She is visited by Ruth, the other Doctor that she recently met, who helps her connect with all of their past selves, giving the Doctor the ability to overload the Matrix and escape.
The Doctor finds the miniaturized Cyber leader. Knowing that he contains the death particle that can eliminate all organic life beyond regeneration she decides she has to go against her anti-killing ethics and use the death particle to eliminate the Master and his Cyber army. But when she confronts him in the Matrix, surrounded by the army she can’t bring herself to kill them. Suddenly Ko Sharmas arrives and takes the death particle from her. He says he will kill the Cyber army and tells her to run. Yasmine, Graham, and the refugees escape to present day Earth in the Master’s Tardis. The Doctor escapes in hers but suddenly the Judoon police appear and teleport her to an asteroid prison.
The Doctor will return perhaps next Christmas in The Revolution of the Daleks.

Thirty years ago today

I did the laundry but the machines flooded.
Nancy and I went to a nice movie at the Revue called “Apartment Zero”. It was slightly flawed because the main character kept saying things that seemed out of character and because the supporting actress behaved more like a male fantasy than a real person. But these criticisms are two spits in the ocean of an on the whole outstanding film.
The plot was complex, tense and comic. The story was about a lonely but anti-social man who rents a room to someone who lives up to his heroic fantasies. The tenant turns out to be a former mercenary that had been kidnapped and trained to kill from childhood.
