May 4, 1991: The wall in the bathroom was hot so I called the fire department. There was no fire but Nancy got hot having all the firemen around her

Thirty years ago today

After breakfast on Saturday morning Nancy and I went out to look for lawn sales. At different places and finishing up on Lee Avenue I bought a Vanity cassette tape, a baseball and a book on the Greek gods all for $1.35. Nancy got a vase, a glass and a bracelet all for $3.20.
I made spaghetti for lunch with lasagna noodles but Nancy had to wait for her juice to go down and so we took a nap for a while.
I noticed a strange smell of heat in the bathroom. I was worried that there might be a fire below me and so I called the fire department. Since I didn't call 911 I'd hoped that they'd only send one guy, but four trucks and a chief came. It turned out I was just smelling in the air and feeling on the wall the hot water in the pipes. Nancy got horny from having all of the firemen around her.

Hank Patterson

On Sunday morning I translated “Betty Jane Rose” by Serge Gainsbourg. At first I couldn't figure out what was going on but then I realized that he was playing with the sounds of the solfège syllables of the musical scale: “do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti” and making them into words. The song is very risqué and basically Betty Jane Rose is a minor looking for a big dose of F major. It was recorded in 1978 by a French Punk band called Bijou. I memorized the first verse and the chorus.
I weighed 89.6 kilos before breakfast. In the late morning I tackled cleaning the inside of my oven door for a fifth time. With the help of soap, baking soda, a cloth, a scrub brush, a tooth brush, and two plastic scrapers I managed to get it almost halfway done. I predict it will take two or three more sessions to finish it and then I’ll have spend another several days cleaning the inside of the oven.

I checked my academic record and found that I got an A in the Introduction to British Literature 2 course.
I weighed 88.9 kilos before lunch. I had eight saltines with old cheddar and a glass of lemonade.
I noticed that my local pharmacy has forms for making appointments to get the covid vaccine, so I might fill it out if it helps to get this whole pandemic over with.
I headed out for a bike ride and it was raining a bit though it wasn’t supposed to rain until tonight. Benji was outside the building and I chatted with him before heading downtown. He says he’s heard that people on certain medications can’t take the vaccine and so he has to ask his doctor.
He told me that in his early years in Canada he was in Ottawa and decided he would walk to Montreal but he only made it forty kilometres.
I rode to Yonge and Bloor. It was warmer than I thought it would be and so stopped on Brock and I took my scarf and gloves off.
When I got home I worked on my poem series “My Blood in a Bug”.
I started a new project in Movie Maker and imported the “Frightening Lightning” video for editing. I spent more than an hour splitting sections of the video on each side of the sections I didn’t want and cutting out the parts in between the splits. I don’t need lightning in daylight and don’t want any buildings or much horizon visible and so I cut out those parts. Movie Maker froze a couple of times while I was working and so I had to shut it down in the Task Manager and start again. By the time I had to make dinner I’d managed to knock the original three minute and sixteen second video down to nineteen and a half seconds, but even that is more than I want. I’ll cut some more out tomorrow. I’m wondering if when I finish the lightning video and the movie of the snakes, when I insert them into the Instructions for Electroshock Therapy video I should start with the lightning and move to the snakes or if I should alternate between the two until I arrive at the footage of the moving electrical cords that I plan to film. I can always experiment beforehand with a separate movie of just the lightning and the snakes and see how that looks.
I weighed 88.8 kilos before dinner. I made pizza with a slice of Bavarian sandwich bread, hot salsa, the other burger that I’d made the night before sliced up and cheddar cheese on top. I had it with a beer while watching two episodes of Andy Griffith.
In the first story Andy is up for a better paying job as an executive for a big corporation. He is so sure he’s going to take it that he doesn’t put his name down for re-election and encourages Barney to run so the town will have a sheriff that knows the job. But Andy doesn’t get the job and now it’s too late for him to run for sheriff and it’s too late for Barney to withdraw. Barney organizes a town meeting and the people sign a petition for Andy to run as a write-in candidate. But when Barney sees that no one plans to vote for him he decides to seriously campaign against Andy. He challenges him to a public debate and brings up three things that he considers are wrong with Andy’s work as sheriff: people are allowed to jaywalk, the sheriff’s office has no teargas and machine guns for emergencies, and Andy doesn’t wear a gun. Andy says there hasn’t been an accident in five years, the emergency equipment is unnecessary and adds that if anyone is unsatisfied with his twelve years as sheriff they can vote for Barney. Barney says Andy has his vote.
In the second story, while chasing a hobo away from the railroad tracks Barney finds a briefcase that they later discover contains $250,000. Andy learns that the money is from a bank robbery and the robber tossed the case from a train to avoid suspicion. The FBI is going to come for the money and so Andy puts it in the safe. Barney is sure the thief is going to come looking for the money and so he goes under cover, pretending to be a high roller so the thief will think he found the briefcase. The robber, Hennessy does take the bait but when Barney pulls his gun on him Hennessy convinces Barney he’s with the FBI. The real agent arrives and contacts Andy. When Barney calls Andy to tell him he’s working with the FBI Andy knows something is wrong. Hennessy convinces Barney to take the money from the safe and then drugs his milk with knockout drops. . Andy and the agent arrive just in time to stop Hennessy and put Barney to bed.
The hobo was played by Hank Patterson, who is most famous for playing the farmer Fred Ziffel, the owner of the intelligent pig Arnold Ziffel, on Green Acres. He was the great uncle of Téa Leoni. He was married for sixty years, from 1915 until he died. When he was on Green Acres he was almost deaf but the producers liked his character so much they worked around the problem. A man would be lying on the floor with a yard stick and he would tap Hank’s leg when it was time to say his lines. He also played stableman Hank Miller on Gunsmoke.
Hennessy was played by Al Checco who was a comedy partner of Don Knotts when they entertained the troops.

May 3, 1991: I mixed ratatouille with the bland tofu and made something good

Thirty years ago today

There was no work on Friday but I got up at 8:30 anyway because Nancy had to go to the doctor. I made her tofu and eggs for breakfast and rode on the streetcar with her as far as the Hasty Market where I got cash out and walked back towards home. I got a coffee from the coffee place, bought some groceries and then went home to work on my Barbie Doll collage.
I cleaned up, but not enough.
I bought an extension cord for my enlarger.
I mixed ratatouille with the bland breakfast leftovers and made something good.
I called Roy but he told me there would be no work for a while.
Nancy came home at around 18:00 and we went to a free movie with her pass at the Scarborough Town Centre. We saw "Sleeping With the Enemy."

Hunting Unowned Lightning

I woke up at 1:00, after three hours of sleep. I got up to do the dishes, wash my face, finish my coffee and brush my teeth. I finished my blog and got ready for bed again at 2:37. I didn’t get much sleep and I knew I wouldn't but I knew if I didn’t rest my body in bed then I'd be exhausted when I got up at 5:00.
I must have dozed off a bit between 4:30 and 5:00 because I dreamed about holding a can of Campbell’s chicken noodle soup and thinking of eating it but then realizing I wouldn’t have time to eat it before I had to wake up.
I finished posting my translation of "Les femmes ça fait pédé" (Women Are So Very Gay) by Serge Gainsbourg and transcribed the lyrics for his song “Betty Jane Rose." This one will probably be easy to learn because it’s lyrically simple, with a lot of repetitions.
I weighed 89.1 kilos before breakfast.
I took a bike ride in the late morning to Yonge and Bloor. I stopped to pee at my place when I came back and then went back out to Freedom Mobile to pay for my phone plan. But when I got there I was told that there are no payments allowed in the store right now because of the lock down. I said I couldn’t pay online because I don't have a credit card. The clerk assured me that I could pay by debit with my Bank of Montreal card but I was doubtful. I left in a bad mood.
I went to No Frills where there were no grapes. Instead I bought two bags of oranges, three mangoes and a pint of strawberries. I also got a jug of orange juice and a container of Greek yogourt.
I had some saltines and old cheddar for lunch with a glass of lemonade containing jalapeno. I won’t buy that drink again. I prefer the tang of straight lemonade but the touch of jalapeno cancels it out.
I took a siesta and was surprised that I didn’t have a very deep sleep considering how little of it I'd gotten the night before.
I paid my rent online and then tried to pay for my phone service by debit but the Freedom website only offered three bank options for doing that and none of them was the Bank of Montreal. I walked over to Freedom and told the guy but he insisted that I could still pay online by debit. He said I went to the wrong Freedom website. I have to use the one marked “Express” and use my Bank of Montreal card as a Mastercard. He showed me that in the lower right corner of my bank card it says “Mastercard” even though it’s not a credit card. He said he’d show me how to do it there but then said the cameras are watching and so I could just pay by debit in the store. He said the security is extremely tight there. We both expressed the hope that we would be out of lock down next month. He said he hasn’t been able to leave the country on vacation in a long time and that’s what he’s going to do when this is over.
When I left Freedom I ran into my neighbour Benji. We chatted briefly about what I’d just been through with paying for my service. He said Freedom is owned by Shaw now and we agreed that might be why the security is so tight. I teased Benji because I rarely see him more than a block away from home and now he was two blocks away. I warned him not to get lost.
            I weighed 88.6 kilos at 17:45.
I worked on my poem series “My Blood in a Bug”.
I spent more than an hour searching for footage of lightning storms. It’s incredible how much material has labels on it to claim copyright. I guess some people make money off of this stuff. Why can't people just share and not try to own everything? I finally found a YouTube video that seems to have what I want and I downloaded it. I only really need a few seconds of footage of lightning against a dark sky. Next I’ll try to edit what I’ve found of lightning and snakes and see how it fits into my Instructions for Electroshock Therapy video. Then I want to try to make my own movie of a nest of electrical cords behaving like snakes.
I made two burgers and had one between two half pieces of toast with a beer while watching two episodes of Andy Griffith.
In the first story Barney receives a chain letter but when he starts to write two copies out of caution Andy chastizes him for being superstitious. To prove he’s not superstitious Barney throws the letter away but then he is plagued by bad occurrences, mostly because he brings them on by being distracted and nervous. A marksmanship test for deputies is coming up and Barney is sure he’ll fail and lose his job if he doesn’t find that letter at the dump. But he doesn’t find it. Andy brings Goober over with a copy of the letter that he received, having sent one to Gomer at the Marine base. Finally Barney leaves it up to Andy to send the letter or not. At the shooting range Thelma Lou comes by at Andy’s coaxing to give Barney confidence and he does fine. Afterwards Barney makes two copies of the letter anyway just to be on the safe side but has an accident anyway.
In the second story Goober is becoming a fifth wheel when Andy, Helen, Barney and Thelma Lou are dating. He causes them to not have a great time and so Andy and Barney try to find Goober a girl. He likes Lydia Crosswaith and they encourage him to ask her out. After an awkward beginning they hit it off but then Goober and Lydia always want to hang out with Andy, Helen, Barney and Thelma Lou. That would be fine if Lydia liked to do anything but she’s a buzz kill for every activity. She just wants to sit and talk but she’s horrible at that as well because she has nothing to say and just answers questions with single words.
Lydia was played by Josie Lloyd who appeared as the character before, but this was the last time.

May 2, 1991: She asked me to be a part time father. I thought if only one of us would be a single parent it should be me

Thirty years ago today

I was on the job site for 9:00 on Thursday but I had to wait a while for Donny and Dave. We didn't start until noon. There was a big upright piano that Gary and Paul came for separately but we had to help them wrestle it down three floors and six flights of stairs. We finished the move at around 18:00 and Dave dropped me off at St Clair station.
Nancy was there when I got home. We were about to go out for burgers when we had a discussion and she confessed that she didn't want to live with me. She asked me if I would mind being only a part time father. We talked about it all night and she had me very confused. She seemed so sure of what she wanted and yet her behaviour had been so irrational lately that I couldn't accept her confidence as real. If only one of us was going to be a single parent I thought it should be me.

Larry Hovis

On Friday morning I finished working out the chords for the first verse of “Calypso Blues” by Boris Vian. I also finished working out the chords for "Les femmes ça fait pédé” (Women Are So Very Gay) by Serge Gainsbourg. I ran through it in French and English and then I uploaded it to Christian’s Translations to prepare it for blog publication.
I weighed 89.3 kilos before breakfast.
I made a fourth effort to clean the inside of my oven door. Progress continues but slowly. I think I might have about a third of the window cleared after using up the first of the two large boxes of baking soda that I bought. A plastic scraper helped to take off some of the black, caked in grease. I’ll tackle it again on Sunday and hopefully I’ll get half of it done.

I weighed 88.9 kilos before lunch. I took a bike ride in the afternoon to Yonge and Bloor. It was almost too chilly for just my spring gloves and only one scarf. On the way home along Queen Street the wind had me going so slow I could barely hold my balance. My neighbour Benji was in front of the building when I got home and so I chatted with him for a few minutes.
I weighed 88.8 kilos after my bike ride, which is odd because it usually drops lower in the afternoon.
I worked on my poem series My Blood in a Bug.
I searched for videos that show nests of snakes that I could harvest for footage for my video of my song Instructions for Electroshock Therapy. I found on YouTube one from the National Geographic about a place in Manitoba that has more snakes than anywhere else in the world and another of the “It had to be snakes" scene of the snake pit from Indiana Jones.
Then I needed some software to allow me to download YouTube videos. One site explained to me how I can use my VLC Media Player to extract videos found online but when I followed the instructions it didn’t work. I suspect YouTube is hip to that trick and has figured a way to block it. The same site’s second suggestion was 4K Video Extractor and so I downloaded that and after a half an hour of installation was able to download the two videos. Hopefully they’ll be editable, since I just need small clips from each one. Next I need some footage of lightning but I didn’t have time to look much before dinner.
I had french fries and the rest of the chicken tenders while watching two episodes of Andy Griffith.
Barney is not in the first story and it is explained that he is away on holiday. Andy is looking for someone to answer the phone at the courthouse while he goes away to a sheriffs convention for a day and a half but he’s come up dry. Finally when Goober volunteers he reluctantly agrees because Goober assures him he can get away from his filling station duties for that time. But when Andy returns he finds that in order to keep his promise of being there to answer the phone he has taken apart a car and reassembled it inside of the courthouse because a customer insists there is something wrong with the engine that Goober has to fix. Andy gets uncharacteristically ugly and threatens to take one of the courthouse guns and shoot Goober if he does not get the car out of the courthouse. Suddenly Sheriff Jackson of Siler City, the head of the sheriffs association walks in for a visit and wonders how and why a car is in the office. When Goober starts talking about how the real problem with the car is that the customer, Gilly Walker is always speeding, Jackson concludes that the car is there as an anti-speeding demonstration. He thinks it’s a great idea and asks Goober to come to Siler City and do the same thing there. After Jackson leaves Andy actually points a gun at Goober to make him take the car apart.
Gilly Walker was played by Larry Hovis, who started out as a singer with a group called The Mascots. As a solo performer he recorded the album “My Heart Belongs to Only You” while at the same time earning a philosophy degree. He performed a few times on Broadway and then moved out to Hollywood where he started appearing on TV shows. He was on Gomer Pyle for ten episodes but he is most remembered for his role on Hogan’s Heroes as demolition expert Sergeant Carter. He later became a writer and producer. He wrote for Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In the year it received a writing Emmy but didn’t get an award because someone had left his name off the list of writers. He produced several game shows, including The Liars Club on which he appeared as a panellist for two years. In the last decade of his life he was a professor of drama at Texas State University.
In the second story Otis rides drunk for his Saturday night stay in the jailhouse on a cow that he thinks is a horse. Barney concludes that Otis has deep psychological problems and because he read a magazine on psychology once he figures he is qualified to fix him. He gives him a Rorschach test but when Otis says the ink blot looks like a bat Barney argues with him that this proves he is disturbed because it obviously looks like a butterfly. Barney begins to alienate Otis so much that he takes his business to Mount Pilot and sleeps in their jail instead. After a while Andy and Barney miss Otis and go to the other jail to appeal to him to come back. When the other inmate, Luke learns how well Otis is treated in Mayberry he encourages him to return. Finally Otis does so, showing up once again riding a cow. But later Luke and several other drunks from Mount Pilot show up as well, not wanting to miss out on Otis’s perks, like breakfast in bed. Otis is a pretty big guy and it didn’t look very comfortable for the cow that he was riding throughout the episode.
Luke was played by Frank Cady, who is best known as grocer Sam Drucker on Green Acres and Petticoat Junction. He was married for 68 years to singer and actor Shirley Jones of The Music Man and The Partridge Family until she died. He also played Doc Williams on The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet.
Just like the night before I got tired after dinner and went to bed early, but this time I hit the hay even earlier at a little before 22:00 and didn’t even bother to take my clothes off.

May 1, 1991: Dave drove me home with the credenza and Nancy liked it

Thirty years ago today

I was at the customer's place on Wednesday almost an hour before Dave got there. The lady and her son were from Liverpool. During the move I broke a table. We finished at around 13:00 and Dave drove me all the way home with the credenza. When Nancy got home later she said she liked it.
I tried to work out Nancy's income tax but it turned out that one of her T4s was incomplete and so we would have to wait. I called Canada Revenue about mine but they said it was still being processed.
I went down to Parkdale to check my mail but there was nothing special. My old place in 105 seemed to be still vacant.
I called Foreplay Magazine but Beth still hadn't sent me the latest issue.
I phoned Mike Copping and he said he'd try to see if we could go to a movie next Tuesday or maybe even tomorrow.
