Eric Stough

On Friday morning I finally memorized "J'ai pas d'regret" (I've No Regrets) by Boris Vian.
Tomorrow I'll look for the chords.
I finished working out the chords for "Ohio" by Serge Gainsbourg and ran through the song in French. Tomorrow I'll upload it to my Christian's Translations blog.
I weighed 84 kilos before breakfast.
I worked on my bedbug timeline and got it to just four and a half months short of the present. I hope to have it done later today.
I weighed 84.1 kilos before lunch.
In the afternoon I took a bike ride but didn't go all the way downtown because it started raining at Bloor and Huron, so I went south and headed home. It stopped shortly after that but started again when I was almost back in Parkdale.
I weighed 84 kilos at 17:00. I was caught up on my journal at 17:42.
I finished updating my bedbug timeline since June 7, 2021. I highlighted all of the main events involving pest control and my interactions with the landlord.
I went up and knocked on David's door to invite him to lunch tomorrow. He gave me a $50 gift card for Metro as usual for this time of year.
I edited my very first Christian's Translations blog from ten years ago because the YouTube video was no longer valid and so I put in a new one and added a new title with copyright information. There are quite a few like that and so I'll spend some time fixing them up.
I had a potato with gravy and a slice of roast beef while watching South Park: Streaming Wars Part 2.
Steve Black is missing and we know that he was stabbed by Man-Bear-Pig and thrown onto a waterslide before going under. But because he is missing the police consider him the prime suspect in the murder of Cussler and the mastermind behind the streaming wars.
Randy Marsh wakes up on a park bench and doesn't remember anything of the last few days. When people see him they recognize him as Karen and panic. The police arrive and tranquilize him. In the hospital the police chief updates him on the global scale problems he caused as Nuclear Karen over the last little while. He is taken home to Tegridy Farms where all the marijuana has died.
Meanwhile the real mastermind behind the streaming wars, Mr. Pi-Pi has begun to market pee as water and he has hired celebrities like Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Reese Witherspoon and Larry David to drink and frolic in his pee in commercials.
Randy is looking at what has happened to the water and remembers that he was a once a scientist, a fluvial geomorphologist who studies the changes in streams and rivers. Randy goes back to his old job at the US Geological Survey and begins working on a solution to the water problem. He figures they can pump seawater to Colorado.
Steve wakes up underneath Pi-Pi's waterpark. There he meets the mate and the child of Man-Bear-Pig and it's because of them that Pi-Pi can control Man-Bear-Pig. Steve escapes.
Then Tolkien, Butters, and Cartman go looking for Steve at the waterpark. They find the slide that Steve went down and they go into the basement where they also meet Man-Bear-Pig's family. They are all trapped by Pi-Pi's security and Pi-Pi says he's going to flood their prison with pee. Pi-Pi also has Man-Bear-Pig wreck the US Geological Survey.
Randy says he's failed and he can't do anything about it. His family say he's right that he can't but there's someone who can. They tell him he needs to bring back Karen. Sharon has saved a jar of weed from his Thanksgiving Day Special of three years ago. He smokes it and turns into Karen again. He goes to the waterpark and overwhelms the place with his sense of privilege. PiPi orders Man-Bear-Pig to attack but then the boys, and the monster's family are free. Man-Bear-Pig kills Pi-Pi.
Randy looks at Cartman's breast implants and realizes he's found the solution to the problem of pumping the seawater into the desalination plant in the mountains. He uses special suction machinery to drain Cartman's implants, as well as the implants of hundreds of women who were told to be brave by Matt Damon. Somehow the implants can be converted to enough water for at least the summer.
The animation director and one of the producers for South Park is Eric Stough. He earned a film degree in 1995 and has been working with Trey Parker and Matt Stone since their very first projects. He's been nominated for 14 Emmy Awards and has won five. He's also won a Peabody Award. He did the unmuffled voice of Kenny McCormick on the few occasions when it has been featured. He and his sheltered upbringing is also the inspiration behind the character of Butters Stotch.

For the third night in a row I found no bedbugs. Maybe filling in the cracks helped by burying some of them.

December 31, 1992: My daughter had a new habit of screaming in a high pitched voice when she wanted something

Thirty years ago today

On Thursday I got up around 8:30 and my daughter stayed asleep until 11:00 or so. After I fed her breakfast she got restless. I got her ready and we went downtown to pick up my cheque from the Toronto Board of Education. I deposited that and my Canada Post cheque into my chequing account, so then I was only $55 short for the rent. I met Nancy at Eaton Centre and we went looking for a Christmas present for our daughter from her. We went to Eaton's Toyland and spent a lot of time but she didn't find anything. We went to the Olive Garden where she bought me a beer and some toasted ravioli. The baby had this very annoying new thing where she would scream in a high pitched voice whenever she wanted something. Nancy said she would lend me some money to help pay the rent and everything. She took our daughter to some "friends" she didn't know for New Years Eve and I went home feeling very depressed.

Friday 30 December 2022

Vernon Chatman

On Thursday morning I worked out the chords for the intro and the first verse of "Ohio" by Serge Gainsbourg. I might have that done tomorrow.
When I put my guitar away after song practice there was a bedbug crawling on the old exit door at the head of my bed looking for a crack to crawl into. It was out of luck in that area.
I worked on my bedbug timeline and updated it to the end of January of this year. I should have it completed later today or tomorrow and then I can spend my holiday on more interesting and creative projects.
I weighed 84.1 kilos before lunch.
In the afternoon I took a bike ride downtown and on the way home I stopped at Freshco. I bought three bags of red grapes, one bag of green grapes, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, bananas, a pack of ground chicken, a jug of orange juice, and a jug of lemonade.
            I weighed 83.9 kilos at 17:45.
I was caught up on my journal at 18:42.
I worked on my bedbug timeline and I've made it to May 9, 2022. I should have it finished on Friday.
I had a potato with gravy and a slice of roast beef while watching South Park: The Streaming Wars Part 1.
The story begins in Denver where the homeowners and businesses are told there is a drought due to the effects of Global Man-Bear-Pig. There is less water coming from the mountains and so Denver has to cut back. The homeowners say they are required to have green lawns. The golf course tycoon Cussler needs water for his clubs and the water park tycoon Pi-Pi needs water for his parks because while 50% of water parks are pee, the other half is water.
Meanwhile Randy Marsh has plenty of water for his marijuana farm. Everybody, including Randy's whole family is calling Randy "Karen" but he doesn't understand why. His daughter Shelley explains to him that Karen is a pejorative term for a white person who acts overly entitled and demanding.
Cartman is depressed about living in a hotdog stand. Then he sees the billionaire Cussler arrive and buy the property across the street.
The water commissioner comes to tell Randy that if he has excess water he can sell it. But Randy doesn't want to. Steve Black however, who owns the farm across the road realizes that if he can cut his own water use by half and can prove that his water runs downstream to the Denver reservoir he can sell 19,000 liters a month. Stan and Tolkien tell him that they can float little boats down the stream to prove where the water goes. Steve says he can sell off pieces of his water rights to subscribers. He asks Stan and Tolkien to build him a boat.
While the boat is floating downstream to Denver we can hear Cardi B's "Wet Ass Pussy".

The boat makes it to Denver but Steve is told that they need to prove that the flow is constant and so a boat has to come through every day. Steve offers the boys $20 a boat. When Randy hears about this he offers to pay double. Then other farms offer them money for boats as well and so they bring Kyle and Kenny into the business.
Meanwhile Cartman has the idea that if his mother gets breast implants she can marry the rich guy across the street. She says even if she wanted to a boob job it costs $10,000. The boys aren't going to tell Cartman about their business but then when he tells them he needs $10,000 for an operation for his mom they think it's serious and let him join. Then Cussler offers them $15,000 for 10,000 boats.
Steve goes up into the mountains and finds that Man-Bear-Pig has decimated the snowpack.
Cartman gets the money for his mother's breast implants and takes her blindfolded to the clinic. She repeats that she doesn't want a boob job. He tells her that if she doesn't get the implants he will. She's tired of giving in and just says he can do what he wants. Cartman gets enormous implants and shows up for school. putting everyone in shock.
Cussler is murdered by Man-Bear-Pig. Steve goes to tell PiPi that he can't sell him any more water, but it turns out that Man-Bear-Pig works for PiPi as a thug. He attacks and stabs Steve and then throws him into a water slide where he goes under. The commissioner tells PiPi that he doesn't really own the water because Colorado owns it. But when the water runs out PiPi plans to sell the pee-water from his water park as drinking water. Then Man-Bear-Pig kills the commissioner.
The show closes with everyone in Denver being shown enjoying their water while "Use Me" by Bill Withers is playing.

The sentient pot smoking towel named Towelie who now works on Randy's pot farm is played by Vernon Chatman. He won a writing Emmy for The Chris Rock Show. He has also written for Conan O'Brien and That's My Bush. With John Lee he created Doggie Fizzle Televizzle, Wonder Showzen, Xavier: Renegade Angel, and The Heart, She Holler. He was a producer for the third season of "Louis".

I searched for bedbugs and found none.

December 30, 1992: I was looking through a magazine at the bus stop when my daughter ran away

Thirty years ago today

On Wednesday in the late morning I went up to Scarborough to pick up my daughter but it took Nancy a long time to get her ready. I found a bunch of Chinese fashion magazines at the bus stop and I was looking through them when my daughter ran away. While I chased after her in the fog we missed a bus. I took some pictures and then we went downtown to copy a collage. I took her to the health food store where I got her some stuff and then we went home. She slept until around 18:00. At 20:30 she made me take her out in the rain. She dragged her new shovel up and down the street until Tom Smarda came up and we went home. I made some spaghetti and sauce and then Mike Copping showed up. It was interesting seeing my daughter hanging out with the guys. She went crazy over Tom, giving him kisses and stuff. She went to sleep at around 1:00 on Thursday after Tom left and Mike took a shower.

Thursday 29 December 2022

Brian Graden

Early Wednesday morning, while I was still in bed, I reached around and squished a bedbug on my back.
I finished memorizing "Ohio" by Serge Gainsbourg and searched for the chords. I didn't find any under Gainsbourg's name but there was a set for Isabelle Adjani's recording of the song. I started working them out for the intro.
I weighed 83.8 kilos before breakfast.
My daughter's package was supposed to get to Montreal on Monday but I figured that since I sent it in the snow storm there might be a delay. I asked her by text this morning if it had arrived yet but it hadn't. I'd thrown out the receipt with the tracking number and so I went out on the deck to go through my garbage and it didn't take long to find it. But as soon as I came back inside, my daughter texted that it had arrived.
I went to the hardware store where I bought a 900 millilitre container of Polyfilla. I filled in a lot of the cracks on and around the old exit door at the head of my bed where I see most of the bedbugs. I found one bedbug on the door while I was spackling. I let my neighbour Benji know that I have plenty to share if he needs to fill any holes in his place.
I worked on my bedbug timeline and added another twelve days.
I weighed 84.3 kilos before lunch. I had a toasted Montreal style bagel with Mexican salami and old English cheddar with a glass of half lemonade and half cranberry juice.
In the afternoon I took a bike ride downtown, wearing my new Samsonite backpack for the first time. It's pretty comfortable but the lower edge of the padding is against a different part of my back than the old backpack, so it might be just a matter of getting used to it. I stopped at Freshco on the way home where I bought three bags of grapes.
            I weighed 83.8 kilos at 17:25.
I killed a bedbug in the middle of the old exit door at the head of my bed. It was full of fresh blood. It was probably looking for a way into one of the cracks that I'd filled up earlier in the day.
I was caught up on my journal at 18:30.
I worked on my bedbug timeline and added two and a half months. There's just a year and a month left until I'm up to the present.
I fried three strips of bacon and an egg, and toasted a Montreal style bagel. I had them with a beer while watching season 25, episodes 5 and 6 of South Park.
In the first story the boys acquire Airsoft guns and go to an Airsoft field for their first battle. But the opposing team consists entirely of teenagers and so the officials split the two age groups up so that each boy is teamed up with one teenager.
Later, Kyle's teenager comes over to show him how to clean his Airsoft gun but he begins to treat Kyle like his parent and wants to be taken care of. Stan's teenager calls him up to ask how to make ramen. Stan tells him he has to boil it but the teen doesn't even know where water comes from in the kitchen. Cartman's teen spends a lot of time in the bathroom with a bottle of lotion but Cartman doesn't understand why he wants his hands to be so soft. Kenny has similar problems with his teen. About the teenagers, Stan asks, "What the hell are these things?" The teens are all depressed and keep saying, "You don't even know me!" Stan's teen calls him up to tell him he's holding his hand over a lighter and he's surprised that he's burnt himself. The boys discuss their teenagers the way parents discuss their teenagers.
Stan's, Kyle's, and Kenney's fathers' plus Stan's redneck uncle Jimbo decide to team up with the boys against the teenagers on the airsoft field. When they go to buy their guns Randy asks Gerald what if the police think the guns are real. Gerald says as long as your gun has a red tip and you're white the police won't shoot you. Randy uses his weed as bait to draw the teens in the open to be fired upon. Cartman busts open the bathroom door while his teen is masturbating and shoots him repeatedly. The adults look forward to their kids becoming teenagers so they can take them out.
The second story is a St Patrick's Day special. Randy Marsh is dressed like a leprechaun and ready for his big marijuana sale but Steve Black across the road has the same idea and is also selling his crop while dressed as a leprechaun. Randy accuses him of cultural appropriation and robbing white people of the only day when they can celebrate being white.
Meanwhile Butters is dressed in green and goes to school looking for someone who isn't so he can pinch them. One girl appears to not be wearing green and so he pinches her. Next the police arrive and he is charged with sexual assault and thrown in jail.
Randy gets into a fight with Steve and is arrested. Steve receives an order for two and a half tons of weed from Farty O'Cool's pub. He doesn't have that much and so he buys Randy's entire supply at half price from Towelie and labels it as his own.
Randy somehow gets leprechaun powers and busts himself and Butters out of jail. Everyone is in a panic upon seeing that a dangerous sexual predator like Butters is on the loose. Butters' patron Saint Patrick descends from heaven to start pinching people.
Along with Trey Parker and Matt Stone, both of these stories are co-written by Brian Graden. After Harvard he started out as a vice president at Fox where he developed the shows Cops, America's Most Wanted and STUDS. He commissioned Trey Parker and Matt Stone to create the short feature The Spirit of Christmas which became a hit. This led to South Park, the first season of which he was the executive producer. He produced Jersey Shore, The Osbournes and Jackass. His production company won its first Emmy for the show HitRECord.
I searched for bedbugs and didn't find any. Since I filled up the cracks on the door there are fewer places to look.

December 29, 1992: My daughter was impressed by my Christmas tree and played with the lights

Thirty years ago today

On Tuesday I met Nancy on the westbound platform at Main Station where she passed me my sleeping daughter. She woke up just as I was getting off the bus in front of my place. I kept thinking she was going to go back to sleep and so I didn't take her out. She was impressed by the tree and played with the lights a lot in addition to her new toy ray gun. She didn't go to sleep again until around 18:30 after I danced while holding her. She seemed to only sleep without complaining when I walked or danced while carrying her. Nancy called at around 20:30 and wanted me to get her ready to bring her to the bus stop. But she missed the bus and so I carried her to her mother down on Queen Street. She wanted me to carry her for her to Warden Station but it would have taken too much time.

Wednesday 28 December 2022

Matt Stone

On Tuesday morning when I went into the bedroom to get my guitar I saw another bedbug crawling up to the upper right hand corner of the old exit door at the head of my bed.
I memorized the third verse of "Ohio" by Serge Gainsbourg. There's only one verse left and I should have that nailed down tomorrow.
I weighed 85.1 kilos before breakfast. That's a little more than yesterday and the heaviest I've been in the morning in two weeks.
I called Topcuts and found that my stylist Amy would be in at 11:00 and so after breakfast I rode my bike up to Yonge and St Clair. I had to pee most of the way there. I got my usual once every four months haircut and then headed back towards home.
On the way I stopped at Canadian Tire to look for a backpack. They had some but none that were as big as the Swiss Gear one I wanted to replace. That's the usual story: You can get everything at Canadian Tire, but you just can't get any of the kinds of everything you're looking for.
I continued south to College where I went into Winners but they only had a few purse-like backpacks. I descended into the mall and followed the maze around until I found a luggage store called "K. Jamson Luggage. But the place was closed, with a sign saying Back in Ten Minutes. A little woman told me she'd been waiting for fifteen minutes. I must have waited for another fifteen before the woman in charge showed up. She was a very friendly middle aged woman with an Eastern European accent.
She said they'd sold out all of their Swiss Gear backpacks and most of their Samsonite. There was one Samsonite backpack that looked like a good replacement for my worn out one. It was a Samsonite Tectonic with a three year warranty. I commented that Samsonite certainly is an old name. She said they recently celebrated their one hundred year anniversary. I decided to take it because I kind of liked it and besides it was too cold out to ride around looking anymore. I paid $163.84 after tax.
I weighed 83.8 kilos at 15:00 before a late lunch.
            I weighed 83.6 kilos at 17:00.
I was caught up on my journal at 20:15.
I roasted a beef sirloin tip and had it with a potato and gravy while watching season 25, episodes 3 and 4 of South Park.
In the first story Mrs. Cartman is having trouble paying the rent and so she gets a job as a real estate agent. When she comes home she finds Eric eating nothing but Nutella because his mother wasn't there to feed him when he got home from school. When she tells him she has a job he tells her, "I'm your job!" Later he looks up real estate agents and discovers that they don't do anything and so he decides to do it. He begins to advertise and draws in a lot of people from the city who repeat certain words over and over again like Tesla and Wi-Fi with no full sentences. The thing is, Cartman is trying to sell the homes of his friends' parents, none of which are for sale. The result is that he's driving up the market. The regular realtors that Mrs. Cartman works for can't compete. The mayor and the South Park Business Association at first wanted city people to come into South Park. But Mr. Kim points out that what city people hate more than anything is other city people. If they let them come then South Park will become a city. They get rifles and declare war on real estate agents. Mrs. Cartman is confronting Eric at the Tolkien House when the Business Association attacks them. While under fire Mrs. Cartman promises Eric she will quit her job, so Cartman gives in. But since she can't pay the rent in their house they move into a hot dog stand.
In the second story, the war between the Ukraine and Russia has made Mr. Mackey nostalgic for the Cold War. In case the Russians attack South Park he starts putting the children of South Park Elementary through emergency drills. PC Principal tells him he has to stop. Mackey begins to suspect the principal of being a Russian spy.
Meanwhile some students, including Butters, have started taking dressage lessons and will be competing in a junior competition. The problem is that the main competition is a young Russian rider. Butters's parents are obsessed with beating Russia at all costs and put pressure as usual on Butters. Another problem is that Butters's horse Melancholy keeps stopping to take a shit in the middle of competition and also gets an erection and starts fucking the Russian horse.
Butters goes to see Mackey because he's the school counselor but he's not listening until he hears about Russia. Mackey goes to his elderly mother's house where she has preserved his old room exactly as he left it with 80s posters. He goes on Microsoft DOS and in the style of the 80s movie War Games he hacks into US nuclear defenses and moves everything to Defcon 3. His mother confronts him and nails it down that Mackey's problem is that he fears getting old and that's why he's gotten nostalgic.
Meanwhile in Russia, Putin's generals go to see Putin and find him dancing to Two Tribes by Frankie Goes to Hollywood because he is also feeling nostalgic for the Cold War and we see that it's a midlife crisis that has caused him to invade the Ukraine.

At the dressage competition the Russian kid is about to win when Melancholy mounts her horse and begins to fuck her. The audience cheers. Mackey comes and talks about how one gets nostalgic when their dick doesn't work anymore and Putin is watching and agrees.
Butters and several other characters are voiced by Matt Stone, who co-created South Park with Trey Parker. They also co-created The Book of Mormon, Orgazmo, Cannibal the Musical, and Team America World Police. It was the popularity of South Park in 1997 that made Comedy Central a success. He says he hates conservatives, but he really hates liberals.

I searched for bedbugs and found none.

December 28, 1992: Mike Copping called to tell me he broke my answering machine

Thirty years ago today

On Monday I got up late and cleaned my place. Mike Copping called to tell me he would give me a call. Duh! He said he'd broken my incoming answering machine tape. Nancy didn't call. I went to my old address and found the cheque that my dad had sent me. I bought Haagen Dazs and coffee. I finished off the food that was left over from our trip to New Brunswick. I worked on projects and my progressed astrological charts. I stayed up late.

Tuesday 27 December 2022

Zoe Kravitz

On Monday morning I memorized the second verse of "Ohio" by Serge Gainsbourg.
When I went into the bedroom to get my guitar I caught a bedbug crawling towards the upper right hand corner of the old exit door. I need to cover that crack.
I weighed 85 kilos before breakfast, which is the heaviest I've been in two weeks, but yesterday was Christmas and I there was extra eating and drinking going on.
I called Topcuts but there was no answer. I found the company's main website and saw that all their salons would be closed on Boxing Day.
I copied my recent thread of emails to and from my landlord and the city bylaw inspector and put them into a document. I copied that document into a USB drive. I gathered up the recent notices from my landlord informing his tenants of the appointment with pest control and the form I signed giving Orkin permission to enter my apartment. I also dug up the notice for my upcoming rent increase. I took all of those documents to Parkdale Community Legal Services, but the sign on the door said they would be closed until January 3. That will give me time to finish creating the bedbug timeline from June 7, 2020 to the present.
I weighed 84.7 kilos before lunch. It's been two weeks since I've been that heavy.
In the afternoon I took a bike ride downtown and back.
I weighed 84 kilos at 17:15. I worked on updating my journal.
For dinner I had a small potato with gravy and three chicken drumsticks while watching The Batman, which is the most boring Batman movie I've ever seen. I was surprised because the critics loved it. I like the fact that this Batman was against using guns. The story was fine but it could have been told beautifully in ninety minutes rather than being stretched out into the echo chamber of a tedious three hours to include gratuitous car chases and overly long scenes of standing around and looking at clues. Does anybody remember the good old days when movies were ninety minutes long? Robert Pattinson seems to have only one expression on his face. The whole point of a secret identity is for one to be the opposite of the other, and not having both Batman and Bruce Wayne scowling through the whole movie. Bruce Wayne is supposed to put up a front to conceal that he is the Batman. Compared to Christian Bale, Michael Keaton and really all the other actors who balanced Bruce Wayne with Batman, Pattinson is the weakest. Of Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, although she is sexy, she has no ability to steal a scene compared to pretty much all of the previous Catwomen. On top of that her costume was just plain drab. Batman villains are supposed to be over the top but the Penguin was just your average gangster. The Riddler was the best character of this film but he wasn't very interesting to look at. The Dark Knight Rises set the bar, while The Batman slithers in the dirt far beneath it.
The story begins with The Riddler brutally murdering the mayor of Gotham and leaving a riddle behind for Batman: "What does a liar do after he dies?" Batman figures that, "He lies still." The riddles are okay because, like I said, the writing was good but just stretched too far. The next night the Riddler kills the police commissioner, severs his thumb and attaches it to a thumb drive that contains images of the mayor with a missing woman at the Iceberg Club, which is owned by The Penguin, who works for Carmine Falcone the crime boss. The Batman goes there and sees Selena Kyle is a waitress at the club.
Later Batman catches Selena as the Catwoman cracking Falcone's safe. She tells Batman Falcone is connected to her friend's disappearance. Batman puts camera contact lenses onto Selena's eyes and has her go undercover at the club to gather information. They learn that the commissioner was and the DA still is working for Falcone.
The Riddler kidnaps the DA and locks a bomb around his neck sending him to crash a car into the mayor's funeral. The Riddler tells the DA if he solves three riddles he'll spare his life. Batman helps solve them but the DA refuses to name the rat he's asked to name in the third riddle and so the bomb goes off. They learn that half the police force is on Falcone's payroll.
Catwoman tries to hijack some money being transferred for Falcone and discovers the corpse of her friend. She tells Batman that Falcone is her father and that he killed her mother.
The Riddler reveals that Bruce Wayne's father had a reporter killed who was trying to expose the history of mental illness of Bruce's mother Martha Wayne nee Arkham and her family. But Wayne's butler, Alfred tells Bruce that Thomas Wayne only asked Falcone to scare the reporter. After the murder, Wayne threatened to turn himself and Falcone in, and so Falcone had him and Martha murdered to keep things quiet.
Batman stops Catwoman from killing Falcone but then Falcone is killed by Riddler, who is placed in Arkham Asylum where he communicates with someone in the next cell who seems to be the Joker. But Riddler's plan continues because he has planted bombs along the sea wall and Gotham is flooded. Meanwhile Riddler's cult of online followers set themselves up on rooftops with sniper rifles to commit mass murder. Batman and Catwoman stop them. Batman has some sort of epiphany that he is not about vengeance but hope and he begins helping save the flood victims.
Catwoman was played by Zoe Kravitz, who is the daughter of Lennie Kravitz and Lisa Bonet. Her first film appearance was in No Reservations in 2007 when she was still in high school.             I found a nymph bedbug on my left wrist while I was at the computer and I turned to see another crawling on my couch for the first time in years.

December 27, 1992: The owner of Ben's Delicatessen in Montreal told me they love to have children do whatever they want because they're future customers

December 27, 1992

When we got to Montreal early Sunday morning Nancy decided she didn't want to spend that much time there. So we just went to Ben's Delicatessen and had bagels and blintzes while our daughter ran around. The maître d' gave her a little plastic piggy bank and I gave her a penny to put inside but she whined when it wouldn't come out. I talked to the owner who told me that they love to have children there and to let them do whatever they want because they are future customers. We walked back toward the station and stopped at that tacky Cathedral Place for a while. We had just enough time for me to get a coffee while Nancy got the stuff out of the locker, then I grabbed my daughter and took her on the bus. There was a twenty minute stop on the way back to Toronto so not enough time for lunch. Nancy and my daughter got off in Oshawa and I had to carry the car seat as well as my stuff. I got off at Scarborough Town Centre instead of downtown and it worked out better for getting home.

Elizabeth Olsen

On Sunday morning I memorized the ninth verse of "J'ai pas d'regret" I've No Regrets) by Boris Vian. There's just one verse left.
For song practice I played a few of my regular songs but added some that I don't usually play, including the dark verse of "We Three Kings" which is the only good poetry in the entire oeuvre of Christmas carols. I wonder why people don't consider The Crucifixion by Phil Ochs as a Christmas song.
I weighed 84 kilos before breakfast. I had an egg with three strips of bacon and a toasted Montreal style bagel while watching Spiderman No Way Home.
The story begins in the aftermath of the previous movie. Mysterio faked his death and left evidence that Spiderman murdered him. He also told the world that Peter Parker is Spiderman. The lawyer Matt Murdock, who we know is secretly Daredevil gets Peter's charges dropped but the court of public opinion is another story.
Peter, his girlfriend MJ and his friend Ned were all slated to go to MIT but are rejected because of negative publicity. Peter goes to Dr. Strange to ask if there's a spell to make everyone forget that he's Spiderman. Strange starts the spell but in the middle of the conjuration, Peter keeps naming people that should still know who he is. Strange stops the spell and contains it in a special box. Later Strange is very pissed off when he learns that Peter hadn't even gone through the MIT rejection appeal process before asking him to give the world's population amnesia.
Later on the Brooklyn Bridge there is an attack by Doctor Octopus. He knows Spiderman and calls him Peter but this version of Spiderman does not know him. They fight and Spiderman is trapped by Otto's mechanical tentacles, which take on the Stark nanotechnology from Spiderman's suit. Spiderman's mask comes off and Otto realizes this is not the Peter Parker he knows. Also now that Otto's arms have the nanotech from Spiderman's suit, Peter is able to control them and contain him. Suddenly the Green Goblin attacks, who Otto recognizes but this Peter doesn't.
Just before the Goblin reaches him Peter is teleported to Dr. Strange's sanctum where he already has Octopus contained and The Lizard. Strange explains that the spell he botched caused a portals to open that drew in people from other universes that know Peter is Spiderman. Peter has to go out and find the others so they can be contained and sent back to their own universes. He retrieves Electro and The Sandman. When he finds the Green Goblin he has already reverted to his good personality of Norman Osborn and he comes with Peter willingly.
But Peter learns that each of these villains were about to be killed by Spiderman before they were brought here and he wants to fix that first so they will live when they return. Strange says that is not our problem. Peter steals the boxed spell and traps Strange in a mirror dimension while he figures out how to cure the villains. Peter takes the villains to Happy Hogan's apartment where he uses Start technology to help Octavius regain higher brain function so he won't try to kill anyone and be killed when he returns.
But before Peter can help anyone else, the Goblin takes control of Osborne again and he leads the other villains to escape. But before he leaves, the Goblin kills Peter's Aunt May. With Doctor Strange detained, Ned has Strange's magic ring and discovers that he can open portals. Through two of them arrive the previous two versions of Spiderman as played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. They team up with the Spiderman of this world and the three Peters all work to develop cures for the rest of the villains. Then they lure them to the Statue of Liberty.
Most are cured with the help of Octopus but the Goblin unleashes the spell, which opens a crack through which everyone that knows a Spiderman from all possible universes is coming through. Strange arrives to try to hold them back. Peter asks Strange to wipe everyone's memory of him and that will solve the problem. Peter goes to say goodbye to MJ and Ned and promises he will locate them after. When he does come to see MJ where she works he is a stranger to her and he can't bring himself to tell her.
In the end we see a version of Eddie Brock from another universe in a bar in Mexico getting drunk with his Venom symbiote inside him. As Strange's spell is cast he disappears but a piece of the symbiote remains behind.
One funny moment in the movie comes when the Peter of this world mentions that he has team experience because he was in the Avengers. The other two Spidermen don't know the Avengers so they ask if it's a rock band.
I weighed 83.6 kilos before lunch. I had a jerk chicken meat pie and a beer.
In the afternoon I took a bike ride. I wasn't sure how far I would go because yesterday the bike lane had been slippery. But this time it was fine and so I went all the way downtown and back. If it doesn't snow overnight I'll call Top Cuts tomorrow to find out if Amy is in and if she is I'll ride up to Yonge and St Clair to get a haircut. Maybe on the way back I'll buy a new backpack.
            I weighed 83.6 kilos at 17:30.
I got caught up on my journal at 19:50.
I heated a curried meat pie with old English cheddar on top, spinach and feta puffs, and a few french fries. I had them with two beers while watching Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.
This was a very bad copy of the movie and sometimes there were vertical lines of light on top of images that blocked them out. I guess it was shot with a bad camera in a theatre. I think most of the movies I've watched lately were also copied with a camera but they were all fine.
The story begins with a version of Doctor Strange running with a teenage girl through a crazy dimension that looks like it is breaking apart. They are being pursued by a demon. They are cornered and this Strange begins to take the girl's power from her even though it would kill her. He says he can use it to save the multiverse because he she can't control it, while she can. But while he is making the transfer he is mortally wounded and the girl is grabbed. In panic she uses her power which opens up a portal to another universe, bringing along the now dead Doctor Strange.
But this is a dream that the Doctor Strange of this world is having. Strange goes to the wedding of his ex-lover and during the reception a giant one eyed octopus type creature is attacking on the streets of New York. It is after the same girl that Strange saw in his dream. Strange and Wong fight the monster and finally Strange uses giant floating hands to grab a lamp post and use it to poke out the eye of the creature. The girl tries to get away from Strange and Wong but they intercept her. Strange wants to know why she was in his dream and she tells him it wasn't a dream. She explains that dreams are windows to other universes. She says the monster was not trying to kill her but to capture her on behalf of someone who is trying to get her power, which is the ability to travel through the multiverse.
She says the other Strange was trying to find the book of Vishanti. Strange says it doesn't exist but Wong says it does but it can't be reached. She says they reached it just as the demon attacked. She says her name is America Chavez. They ask her to come to Kamar Taj. Wong notes that the monster had rune markings and so it was not created by sorcery but rather witchcraft.
Strange goes to see Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch. Before he arrives Wanda wakes up from a dream in which she is happy with her two children. When Strange comes and asks her what she knows about the multiverse. She suggests they bring America to her and then she realizes that he hadn't mentioned her name. The cat's out of the bag and she admits that she's the one who's been pursuing America to take her powers so she can go to a universe where her sons exist. Strange sees that she's been reading the Darkhold, the book of the Damned and that it has corrupted her. She warns strange to turn America over by sundown.
Wong prepares Kamar-Taj for attack and every student must become a warrior. Wanda attacks but all of Strange's, Wong's, the teachers', and the students' magic is not enough to hold her back. She begins to drain America's power but America opens a portal and Strange goes with her through it.
They travel from Strange's universe 616 through several universes to arrive at the one called 838. Strange suggests finding this world's version of her to see if she can control her powers but America says there is no other version of her and she knows this because she doesn't dream. They head to look for this world's Doctor Strange. Strange almost gets hit by a car because on this Earth they go on red. America says, "Rule number one of multiversal travel. You don't know anything." America steps on a memory platform and we see that on her world she had two mothers.
In front of this world's sanctum is a monument to the late Doctor Strange and the sorcerer supreme is Strange's enemy Baron Mordo, who in this world appears to be a good guy. He welcomes them into the sanctum but drugs them and they wake up contained in a facility run by the Illuminati that includes that world's version of Captain America but called Captain Carter and with a Union Jack on her shield, Mr. Fantastic, Black Bolt, Captain Marvel, and Professor X. They are not worried about the Scarlet Witch and consider any version of Doctor Strange to be the greatest threat to the multiverse.
Their Doctor Strange had tried Dreamwalking between universes and caused one universe to be destroyed. So they executed him with Black Bolt's voice.
Wanda forces Wong to take her to Wundagore where she uses the Darkhold to Dreamwalk in the body of the Wanda of universe 838. She attacks the facility to get America. Four members of the Illuminati fight her and die.
Mordo attacks Strange and Strange wins. Wanda comes for America but Professor X confronts her. She kills him but finds that America has escaped. It turns out America also has super strength she hadn't known about.
Strange finds America and that world's Christine and Christine leads him to the Book of Vishanti. Just as Strange gets it Wanda attacks, grabs America, and destroys the Book of Vishanti. The Dreamwalked Wanda uses America's power to open a portal and push Strange and Christine into the universe being destroyed by the Dreamwalk, and America back to Earth 616. where the Scarlet Witch is waiting.
Strange goes to the Doctor Strange of the dying universe and finds he's been corrupted by the Darkhold. They fight and the other Strange dies.
Wanda begins draining America's power. Strange uses the Darkhold to dreamwalk into the corpse of the Dr. Strange that came with America to universe 616. Strange is attacked by the souls of the damned that defend the Darkhold but he channels their power against Wanda. They hold Wanda off long enough for Strange to free America. She thinks he's going to take her power like the other Strange tried to do but he tells her that she always had control over her power because every place they went supposedly accidentally was the right place.
Wanda breaks free and takes America but America says, "I'll give you what you want." She and Wanda appear in the living room of another Wanda in front of her boys, who see the Scarlet Witch strangling America and call to their mother for help from the witch. The other Wanda comes but the witch knocks her aside. The boys throw things at the witch and she screams for them to stop. They run from her and say, "Don't hurt us!" She starts to cry and says she would never hurt them. They run to their mother. The other Wanda tenderly reaches out to the Witch. America sends her back to Wundagore in 616. Wanda destroys the Darkhold in every universe including the temple on Wundagore, collapsing it on top of herself. America becomes a student at Kamar-Taj.
In the end Strange winds up with an eye on his forehead from having messed with the Darkhold. In the comics that's called the Eye of Agamotto. This copy didn't show the post credit scene but I tracked it down on YouTube. Clea, the other-dimensional sorcerer comes to summon Strange for a mission. In the comics she was an escaped servant of the Dread Dormammu, Strange's greatest enemy. In the comics she becomes Strange's lover. She was played here by Charlize Theron.
Wanda was played by Elizabeth Olsen, who is the younger sister of the famous twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. She first appeared at the age of four in TV movies starring her sisters. Her first film appearance was a starring role in Martha Marcy May Marlene, for which she earned critical acclaim. She then starred in Silent House. She co-starred in Red Lights, Liberal Arts, and Kill Your Darlings. She starred in "In Secret". She co-starred in the 2014 version of Godzilla, "Very Good Girls". She first appeared as The Scarlet Witch in the post credits scene of Captain America: the Winter Soldier and then was in every Avengers and Captain America movie from the Age of Ultron until Endgame. She co-starred in I Saw the Light, Wind River, Ingrid Goes West, and Kodachrome. She produced and starred in the web series Sorry for Your Loss. She co-starred in the mini-series Wanda Vision, which I probably should have watched to understand Doctor Strange 2 better.

For the fourth night in a row I found no bedbugs.

December 26, 1992: Nancy and I talked the way we used to before she went crazy

Thirty years ago today

On Saturday, Nancy and I talked until 6:00 because she was afraid to go to bed in the dark in a strange place. We had a pretty good conversation and talked the way we used to before she went crazy. It had been a very nice holiday for me, Nancy, and our daughter. We heard Dad getting up at 6:00 and Nancy panicked and rushed to bed, saying, "He's gonna think we were having sex!" I got up in the late morning and the baby woke at around noon. When Nancy rose in the early afternoon we went out to the store. I carried my daughter out a few minutes after Nancy and just as we were leaving, my sister Sibyl, her husband Ken and their kids Nicholas and Aaron pulled into the driveway. At the store Nancy expressed her annoyance over my dad's complaining. When we were walking back to Dad's place my brother Allison drove in. Nicholas and Aaron seemed to like their presents. Sibyl gave me Chicklets and Brut. Allison gave me $20, but we had nothing for him. My daughter was asleep when we got to the station in Grand Falls and we caught the bus at 21:30. She slept part of the way to Montreal.

Adrien Beard

On Saturday even though I had unclicked "read only" in the Properties my Downloads folder several times, it kept reverting back to "read only" which prevents downloads from loading in the folder. I looked this up and found that "read only" persistence often indicates a corrupted file. I did a system scan and some files were found to be corrupted and were repaired but some couldn't be. For the ones still corrupted I'm trying to follow the instructions, which involve more system scans.
I blog-published "Baby's Alone in Babylon", which is my translation of "Baby Alone in Babylon" by Serge Gainsbourg. I memorized the first verse of his song "Ohio".
It's minus eleven outside and even with the heat blasting it almost feels like it's not on.
I weighed 83.5 kilos before breakfast.
After wasting two hours of my morning on the "read only" problem I found out from another site that when the "read only" box is blacked in it doesn't mean "read only". It doesn't seem to mean anything. All this time all I needed was a restart to get my downloads flowing.
I weighed 84.1 kilos before lunch. I had a toasted bagel with Mexican salami and old English cheddar with a glass of half lemonade and half cranberry juice.
In the afternoon I took a bike ride but the conditions on the Bloor bike lane were too treacherous in places for me to want to go all the way downtown. I went as far as Ossington, then south to Queen and west. I stopped at Freshco on the way home to get eggs and a pack of Sponge Towels.
            I weighed 83.8 kilos at 17:15.
I made pizza on two halves of a Montreal style bagel with Mexican salami, Basilica sauce, and old English cheddar. I had it with a beer while watching season 25, episodes 1 and 2 of South Park.
In the first story Mr. Garrison is teaching his first class after the last few years when he was president of the United States. He starts off by telling the students about his personal life and how he's been with Marcus but now he's with Rick. He introduces the class to Rick but then Marcus calls and Garrison wants the class to help him lie to him about Rick. But when the class is silent he is complaining about their lack of response when PC Principal walks in. The principal punishes the class for not being responsive to their teacher and says the entire class is not allowed to wear pyjamas on Pyjama Day on Friday. Some students call the principal a Nazi and so do some parents. Most of the adults in South Park wear pyjamas in solidarity. The principal won't back down out of fear of appearing weak. Some people are arrested for not wearing pyjamas. The students are planning on apologizing to Garrison even though they did nothing wrong. But Garrison starts a class with more intimate details about his night last night. Then he challenges the students to repeat what he just said but they can't. He gives them hell for not paying attention just as the principal walks in. But the principal is about to give in and offer his resignation until Wendy Testerberger reminds him that Friday is also Opposite Day. This way he can save face by just telling everyone to wear what they want.
I never got the concept of pyjamas. I had them when I was a kid but ditched them around the time I discovered masturbation. Why would anyone wear clothes to bed when the whole point is to be naked with yourself?
Season 25, episode 2 is one of the cleverest South Park stories ever. The marijuana farmers' collective determine that not enough black people are involved in the weed business. Randy Marsh decides to try to get close to the only black family in South Park, the Blacks. Then he asks the Blacks to dinner for the first time. While they are there he asks why they named their son Token. But Steve Black says he named his son Tolkien because he's a big fan of Lord of the Rings. Stan is shocked because he always though his friend's name was Token. He calls Kyle but it turns out Kyle always knew. Stan remembers that Cartman once wore a T-shirt with "Token" written on it but it turns out that Cartman always knew his name was Tolkien but he just didn't know there was an "l" in the name. Stan discovers that he is the only one who thought the name was "Token". He goes to a doctor and confesses what he thought the name was. The doctor says he's a piece of shit for going along with the dominant culture of the white paradigm and then turns to address the audience, saying that anyone that thought black parents would have named their child "Token" is a fucking racist. That's the clever part because everybody who's ever watched South Park for the last twenty years has thought that the kid's name was "Token".
Tolkien Black is played by Adrien Beard, who has also done the voice of Steve Black, Squirrely the Squirrel and a few other characters. He is also the art director and the main storyboarder for South Park.
For the third night in a row I found no bedbugs. It's been a while since they've stayed away this long. I wonder if it's the cold weather that's keeping them deep in the walls.

December 25, 1992: My daughter's favourite presents were the little broom and shovel

Thirty years ago today

On Christmas day at 8:30 my dad woke me up to ask me to shovel his front steps. I waited around all morning for my daughter to wake up so she could open her presents, but it was around 12:30 by the time that she and her mother got out of bed. The first things she opened were her presents from Mike Copping. She played with the blocks while I strained to blow up the car. Next she opened the Lego followed by the broom and shovel. As I suspected, the last two were her favourites. I guessed that she would grow into the Lego. We visited my Aunt Pear, and while we were there, Aunt Helen and Uncle Peter showed up. Later I talked on the phone with my ex-sister-in-law Anne.

Natalie Portman

On Friday morning I finished working out the chords for "Baby alone in Babylon" by Serge Gainsbourg. I ran through the song in English and French and then uploaded it to Christian's Translations. I started editing it to prepare it for publication on the blog and I should have it posted tomorrow.
I weighed 84 kilos before breakfast.
In the late morning I finished tagging and labeling the candy for my daughter. I had planned on going to get a haircut today but the snowstorm hit and I wasn't going to ride my bike up to Yonge and St Clair. I did ride to the post office to buy a bigger shipping box, then I brought it home and packed it. I secured it with packing tape and addressed it, then I took it back to the post office and mailed it via express. It's supposed to get there by Monday but I wonder of that's realistic considering the weather.
I weighed 83.6 kilos before lunch.
In the afternoon I rode down to No Frills where I bought five bags of grapes, old English cheddar, five-year-old Canadian cheddar, a strawberry-rhubarb pie, three bags of skim milk, Basilica sauce, mild salsa, a container of skyr, and a jug of cranberry juice.
I weighed 84 kilos at 16:30. I was caught up on my journal at 18:52.
I extracted almost two months from my journal for a bedbug timeline.
I had a potato with gravy and two chicken drumsticks while watching Thor: Love and Thunder.
The story begins with Gorr and his dying daughter in the desert. He prays to his gods but she dies. He finds an oasis where his gods live and they are arrogant and indifferent. The god-killing Necrosword offers itself to Gorr and he takes it to kill his gods. The sword gives him the power to create shadows that spawn monsters and he uses it for his new mission to kill all gods.
Meanwhile Thor is travelling with the Guardians of the Galaxy who are stopping some furry sky bikers from attacking the Indigarrians whose protective gods have been murdered. Thor defeats their enemies but inadvertently destroys their sacred temple. Nonetheless they reward him with two giant screaming goats. These goats in Norse myth are Toothgrinder and Toothgnasher and they pull Thor's chariot through the sky.
Meanwhile on Earth, we see that Thor's former lover, Jane Foster has stage four cancer and she's taking chemo therapy. But she remembers having written about the strength giving powers of Thor's hammer Mjolnir which was destroyed by Hela. Its pieces are on display in the Norse God colony of New Asgard on Earth. She goes to see them and in her presence the pieces begin to pull together. We remember then that Thor had previously said to Mjolnir for it to always protect Jane.
The Guardians receive several distress calls about attacks by the God Butcher and one of them is from the Norse goddess Sif. Thor and his rocky friend Korg along with the screaming goats teleport with the help of Stormbringer to where they find Sif with her arm ripped off. She says Gorr is headed to destroy Asgard. Thor takes her there to receive medical help and finds Gorr and his monsters are already attacking. Valkyrie the King of Asgard is there fighting and Thor joins in. He senses the presence of his hammer and calls to it. It flies towards him and stops and then flies into the hand of Jane Foster who is the new Mighty Thor. Thor swallows his surprise and they fight off the monsters, but Gorr kidnaps the children of Asgard. One of the children is Heimdall's son Astrid, who now goes by Axel because he likes Axel Rose of Guns n Roses. Axel has the power to send a ghost projection of himself to Asgard but he does not know yet how to fully channel it. Thor helps him concentrate and Thor's ghost image is able to go to where the children are imprisoned. They are in the Shadow Realm.
Thor and Valkyrie agree that Gorr will be most powerful in the Shadow Realm and so they need to raise an army of gods. They go to Omnipotent City that is presided over by Zeus. The four of them travel there in a flying Viking ship pulled by the goats. At Omnipotent City Zeus is played by an over-the-top Russell Crowe with a Greek accent. He puts on a show with his lightning bolt. But then he starts talking about orgies and human sacrifices and they start to think they're not going to get any help from him. Valkyrie says they should steal his Thunderbolt but Thor is against that. While they are arguing Zeus asks, "Who's talking?" Thor starts to speak but Zeus tells him to take the stage. Thor tries to appeal to him about the God Butcher but Zeus is not interested. He is angry that Thor is arguing and tells him he is uninvited to the orgy. He confines Thor's hands on each side and then strips him to see through his disguise. Upon seeing Thor naked the goddesses standing beside Zeus all faint. Zeus says Gorr will not reach Eternity. Valkyrie says, "Oh shit!" because she knows now that is Gorr's goal. Eternity will grant the wish of the first person that reaches it. Zeus tells Thor that he can't let him and his friends leave Omnipotent City because then Gorr can learn where it is. Thor breaks free and Jane, Valkyrie and Korg attack, defeating Zeus's soldiers. Zeus hits Korg with his Thunderbolt and destroys his rocky body. He throws it at Thor but Thor catches and throws it back, killing Zeus. Under the pile of rocks that are left from Korg's body is his face, still alive. It turns out that's the only living part of a Kronan. Valkyrie ties Korg's face to the back of her head so he can help her fight her way out. Korg calls for the screaming goats and they come crashing in. Valkyrie grabs the Thunderbolt, kisses one of the goddesses and they escape.
They make it to the Shadow Realm but the children are gone. Gorr is there and Jane figures out that Gorr needs Thor's axe Stormbreaker to open the gates of Eternity. Gorr binds the three in shadows and tightens them on Jane, threatening to kill her if Thor does not call the axe. Thor calls it and they are freed. They battle and Valkyrie is stabbed by the Necrosword. Thor has Stormbreaker take them home but just as they are teleporting away Gorr grabs the axe. They make it back to Asgard, Valkyrie receives medical attention but Jane's cancer gets worse and she collapses.
Thor takes the Thunderbolt and travels to the gates of Eternity where Gorr has taken the children. Gorr sets up Stormbreaker to begin firing energy to open the gates. Thor arrives and gives each of the children some of his power so they can become Asgardian warriors and fight the shadow monsters while he fights Gorr. While they are fighting it is not going well for Thor. Jane sees Mjolnir floating beside her hospital bed. Thor is about to be killed when Gorr is hit by Mighty Thor's hammer and Jane arrives on Valkrie's winged horse. While she is fighting Gorr, Thor frees Stormbreaker, throws it to Axel so the children can teleport home. While the Necrosword and Thunderbolt are locked together, Jane throws Mjolnir and breaks the Necrosword.
Jane collapses and Gorr makes it through the gate. Gorr is about to make his wish but Thor reminds him that rather than wishing for the death of all gods in revenge for his daughter's death he can simply wish for his daughter to be alive. Then Thor goes to hold Jane in her finale seconds of life. Gorr wishes for his daughter and she is there alive. Thor and Jane kiss one final time and she dies. But Gorr is dying and he asks for Thor to take care of her and he nods. Korg's body grows back. Gorr's daughter is named Love and Thor becomes her foster father. He's trained her to be a warrior and she has Stormbreaker while he has Mojolnir back as they fight bad guys together as Love and Thunder.
In the end Jane arrives in Valhalla.
In the end credits we also see that Zeus is alive and he tells Hercules to go after Thor.
I found this movie to be a charming blend of sadness, comedy and action. I didn't expect to like it as much as I did. But you can't go wrong with screaming goats and Greek Goddesses fainting when they see Thor naked.

I searched for bedbugs and for the second night in a row I found none.

December 24, 1992: My Dad was not used to having small children in his home

Thirty years ago today

On Thursday we changed buses in Riviere du Loup and fortunately my daughter didn't wake up. We stayed on the same bus after our stop in Edmundston and got to Grand Falls at around 6:30. We got right into a cab and when we got to Dad's place, he paid the $12 fare. He seemed glad to see us. We were pretty spaced out after the trip. Nancy went to sleep and so I had to stay up and deal with the baby. Dad's place was not set up for small children and there were all kinds of restrictions that my daughter wasn't used to. When I couldn't stand up anymore, I put the baby on the bed with Nancy and went to sleep. I woke up at around 18:00 and had some turkey that my dad had roasted. We watched TV. The baby woke up a little later and didn't go to sleep until around 0:30. Nancy and I wrapped presents and sorted out the pictures that we'd brought for Dad.

Rocky Johnson

On Thursday when I got up I saw that some recent South Park episodes that I'd started downloading last night all have the message: Error: the system cannot find the path specified. (Write to disk). This happened a couple of days ago and I was able to reset the destination folder for individual torrents, then after a restart they loaded. But this never happened before recently. Torrents have always automatically downloaded into Downloads. I wanted to fix this so it's automatic again and so I looked it up. It was suggested that the problem might be that my Downloads folder was set at Read Only. Sure enough it was. Then I found a way to set the default download destination at Downloads again. Lately it seems I have to restart my computer to get the downloads rolling again.
I worked out the chords for all but the final verse of "Babe alone in Babylon" by Serge Gainsbourg.
The odour from the bath bombs I bought yesterday for my daughter is overwhelming and during song practice I was having a reaction with itchy eyes and tension in my chest. Finally I put the stuff in a garbage bag, tied a knot and hung it out of the window in my kitchen. That cleared it up mostly but there were still lingering particles.
I weighed 83.8 kilos before breakfast.
I was going to go get a haircut today but when I called Top Cuts I found out my favourite stylist Amy wouldn't be in until Friday. I had intended to do laundry on Friday but now I switched my plans and did my wash today. If the snowstorm hits overnight I might not ride up to Yonge and St Clair tomorrow and so I'll have to get my do done after Christmas. It doesn't matter that much as long as it's cut before I start school in January. It's not as if I'm going to any parties or going on any dates so there's no one to look good for over the holidays.
I weighed 83.4 kilos before lunch at 13:35.
In the afternoon I took a bike ride downtown. On Tuesday night I texted my daughter and asked if she needed anything for Christmas besides the usual candy. She got back to me last night that she wanted a loofah and socks, so while I was downtown I looked around. I found a natural loofah at Shoppers Drug Mart. I used the automated cashier but it scanned my item twice and so the real cashier had to fix it. Then I realized it wasn't the kind that takes cash and so I had to pay by debit. I went to the Great Canadian Sox Shop where they have a lot of annoying socks with pictures on them but in the back I found a pair of quality long red wool socks, so I bought those.
On the way home I stopped at Freshco where I bought four bags of red grapes, some bananas, strawberries, blueberries, a sirloin tip beef roast, a bag of plain kettle chips, a bag of barbecue kettle chips, skyr, a pack of frozen filo puffs filled with feta and spinach, vanilla bean Haagen Dazs, and a jug of lemonade.
            I weighed 83.5 kilos at 18:30.
I was caught up on my journal at 20:09.
I worked a bit more on tagging and labelling the candy I bought for my daughter. But with the two gifts I bought today I think I'm going to need to buy the next size up for a shipping box. Hopefully I'll have time to buy it, pack it, and mail it on Friday.
I had a potato with gravy and two chicken drumsticks while watching Black Adam.
It had Korean subtitles that I couldn't remove because some idiot burned them into the video. After a while I was able to zone them out.
The story starts out slow because all DC movies seem to have to spend a lot of time on the origin story. In the fictional Middle Eastern region of Khandaq 5000 years ago the people are enslaved by a king who forces them to mine for eternium. Eternium takes the form of powerful blue gems that the king plans to fit into a crown to make himself an unparalleled and undefeatable force. A father and his young son are two of the slaves and after a soldier kills a slave that has found some eternium the boy calls for an uprising. His father tells him to be quiet and alive, but the boy grabs the gem from the soldier and runs.
The boy is caught and sentenced for execution but just as the sword swings he disappears. He appears before the council of wizards that are behind the magic of the modern Captain Marvel. They say Shazam and transform him into a hero named Teth Adam. He defeats the king and is later entombed for reasons we are not told until later.
In 2022 Khandaq is ruled by an international crime organization known as Intergang. Adrianna is an archaeologist and a resistance fighter working with her brother and two other colleagues to find the Crown of Sabbac in hopes that its power will help to free Khandaq of Intergang. She finds the crown in a mountain cave but somehow Intergang soldiers have tracked her. Her friend Samir is killed and she will be too but she reads the inscription in the cave out loud and awakens Teth Adam, who defeats the soldiers, killing most of the ones that fight him.
When news of the awakening of Teth Adam comes to Amanda Waller she deems him too dangerous to be uncontained and so she sends the Justice Society, consisting of Hawkman, Doctor Fate, Atom Smasher, and Cyclone to capture him. Adrianna confronts the Justice Society, asking why they think they have the right to stop Khandaq's hero when they never once in all these years came to liberate Khandaq from Intergang. She wonders what kind of justice they fight for.
She is informed that Teth Adam is not what she thinks he is. He was imprisoned by the wizards for nearly destroying Khandaq.
Adrianna's colleague Ishmael reveals himself to be the leader of Intergang in Khandaq. He is also a direct descendant of the king for whom the crown was made. He kidnaps Adrienna's son Amon who has hidden the crown. Adrienna gives him the crown to save Amon but Ishmael betrays her and fires at Amon. Teth Adam catches the bullet but unleashes power that wounds Amon and kills Ishmael.
Adam reveals that it wasn't he that was given the powers by Shazam but his son Hurut. When soldiers had attacked Hurut's father and wounded him, Hurut gave his powers to Adam to save him. Immediately after that Hurut was killed and that's what enraged Adam, causing him to destroy much of Khandaq. That is why he was imprisoned.
Adam agrees to surrender because he doesn't feel worthy. He says the word Shazam and reverts to an ordinary human. He is imprisoned in Waller's facility and submerged in water with his mouth covered do he can't say Shazam again.
But because Ishmael died while wearing the crown he descends into hell where he is given the powers of the six demons of Sabbac. He attacks Khandaq with an army of zombies and fights the Justice Society. They can't defeat him and so Doctor Fate sends a telepathic message to wake Adam. He escapes but loses consciousness and in a dream of the past he says Shazam. Sabbac kills Doctor Fate before Adam kills Sabbac. The Justice Society now leave Adam to protect Khandaq.
Waller warns Adam not to leave Khandaq. Then in the final scene Superman comes to Adam and says they should talk.
The film had its moments but Dwayne Johnson is a really stiff actor. All he can really do is deadpan and he's even worse than Jason Momoa. A lot of the action was the same kind of action repeated over and over. Both Atom Smasher and Cyclone had pretty useless powers and their flirting with each other seemed unrealistic. I give it a B minus.
Dwayne Johnson is the son of Canadian wrestler Rocky Johnson. Rocky was born in Nova Scotia. He trained to be a boxer and sparred with Mohammed Ali and George Foreman. He started professional wrestling in Southern Ontario and changed is name to Rocky after Rocky Marciano. He and his tag team partner Tony Atlas became the first black champion wrestlers in WWE history. He trained his son Dwayne, who became one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time.
I searched for bedbugs and found none.
